Phillip demonstrates independence after experiencing blindness as evidenced in the novel when he became able to not need anyone to help him out anymore and do it by himself. Around the middle of the book Timothy contracts malaria and Phillip steps up and cares for him and shows bravery. “Once he got back up but fell down to the mat, and I told him to stay very still.” (Taylor Pg 89,90) This structures the assertion because it shows Phillip changing as a person to help Timothy and that he cares for him.
