Blindness And Bravery In Theodore Taylor's The Cay

In The Cay, Phillip’s character reveals that through many conflicts, he developed stubbornness,bravery, and independence. The Cay by Theodore Taylor starts off swell at first with a character named Phillip Enright on the island of Curacao and then a lot of drama happens. Read more into this paper and you will find out the different characteristics of Phillip explained and what happened to him.

Phillip demonstrates independence after experiencing blindness as evidenced in the novel when he became able to not need anyone to help him out anymore and do it by himself. Phillip became very lazy and stubborn at the beginning of the book and didn’t help Timothy for a while. “You can make d’mats. I looked over in his direction, You do it, I said.” (Taylor Pg70)

Around the middle of the book Timothy contracts malaria and Phillip steps up and cares for him and shows bravery. “Once he got back up but fell down to the mat, and I told him to stay very still.” (Taylor Pg 89,90) This structures the assertion because it shows Phillip changing as a person to help Timothy and that he cares for him. The book is starting to come to an end and Phillip is forced to stay on the island and survive alone with Stew Cat with lots of work to do and becomes independent. “But something told me I must stay very busy and not think about myself. I accomplished a lot in three days, even putting a new edge on Timothy’s knife by honing it on coral.” (Taylor Pg 116,117) This strongly supports the assertion as a result of Phillip showing he can survive by himself without Timothy and being strong. When the storm is about to occur Phillip becomes brave and tell timothy he wants to be his friend and Timothy says “He said softly, Young bahss, you've always been my friend.”(TaylorPg This reveals that Phillip is starting to change personalities and become a
