Because of his appearance (a large black boy) many teachers judged him on his abilities before he was assessed on any topic tests. Only after properly understanding Oher, a teacher understood that he could perform tests much better once they were taken verbally. “I don’t think he has any idea of what I’m teaching.” This was verbally expressed by one of Michael's teachers. This diegetic sound technique really helped me understand that before that one teacher had actually tried to understand Oher, the teachers in this school weren’t aware of Michael's abilities as they never bothered to carefully pay attention towards him, therefore no teacher ever mentally conceived of giving him extra time to help him improve his grades. From this I understand that the Michael Lewis has really tried to illustrate to us that by judging someone based on their appearance can genuinely have a negative impact on that individual's life. And I totally agree with the Director as I feel that Oher always struggled to get help with his education only because he knew that everyone had engendered a deplorable image of him, therefore he never asked for help only because he was being judged on his ability because of his appearance. This diegetic sound technique really helps me understand that just because of Michael's appearance others had made assumptions that Collins would not be safe with Michael and therefore he shouldn’t be living with them. From this I also understood that even though Michael was constantly being judged based on his appearance, he kept on trying to prove himself as a good person in front of others.
