Bless Me, Ultima by Anaya explains the life of a young Mexican-American boy named Antonio Marez. Who lives in New Mexico during the mid-1940. The novel opens up with Ultima, a curandera or a healer who comes to live with Antonia and his family for the last years of her life. As the story progresses, we see the difficulties that Antonio has to go through and how he matures. This novel contains elements of the types of different stories such as drama, fantasy,and nonfiction. This novel contains the Ananya's actual childhood with a bit of fantasy here and there. Through him we learn about the challenges he faces with his religion and God. Ultima is a curandera or healer who is at her last days of her life. She is the woman who helped out Maria, Antonio’s mother to have all her children. She is also called, “Grande” which means she holds a spiritual power that no one else carries. She is a savior to those who are at the verge of death. Tenorio is a malicious, saloon, keeper and father of the three daughters who take part in the Black Mass ritual that curses Lucas Luna. After Ultima lifts the curse off of Lucas one of Tenorios daughter ends up dying and due to that he begins to feel hatred towards Ultima throughout the whole novel. There are times when I too question being Catholic and feel as though those who are not of this religion are looked down on. The tone and mood of the novel was so strong that it always had my attention and left me wanting to read more. The plot really flowed nicely which helped me better understand what was happening.
