Antonio falls bystander to another death, this time it is the violet death of Narciso, a friend of Tony's father who is shot and killed by Ternorio, a man whose family is associated with evil. As Narciso is laying on the floor dying he asks Antonio to be the priest and bless him and Tony describes in his own words that he “…had to pray. I had to pray an act of Contrition for his departing soul like I prayed for Lupito” (Anaya 170). Tony did not run in search for a priest at such desperate time, but instead became the role Narciso needed in that moment. Tony, still a child, is witnessing a man that meant no harm dying and through tears he has to take the role of an adult and hear his last confession. Tony's past experience with the reality of death prepared his consciousness to not run for the hills at the sight of a dying man. Tony becomes aware that good people, like Narciso are not exceptions to the evil in the world. In situations where one is appointed roles regardless if applicable or not, humans expose themselves to the hardship and true form of life. In the novel Tony describes “Everything I believed in was destroyed” (Anaya 244). After Florence death Tony questions what god to believe in because what god would allow the death of his friend. Tony starts to question what to believe in, who to trust. Tony's mindset on his religious beliefs leads to his loss of innocence because the guidance he looked towards God and the Golden Carp, a god that takes the form of a fish, in search of answers to his pending questions about his destiny are not responded. Antonio realizes that nobody has the remedy to his internal conflict of what his future is, he has to unravel his fate himself. He has to make his own choices. In society people are always looking for someone else for guidance weather that be a god, parent, partner or confidante. Through life one learns that there is nobody that can set out a specific plan to dictate someones life, but it is the person themselves that make their own choices that leads to how they want their life to be. People grow knowledgeable enough to know what they want and where they want to be without being dependent on others.
