Lung cancer is known as the number one cause of cancer deaths in both men and women nationwide. () There are two types of lung cancer and they both grow and spread differently from each other. () The first type of lung cancer is the small cell lung cancer (SCLC for short). () Small cell lung cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the tissues of the lungs. () The limited stage is the first stage of lung cancer. () In this stage, the cancer is confined to its origin (original?) area in the lymph nodes and lungs. () Common signs of small cell lung cancer include chest pain and discomfort, a cough that only gets worse and does not go away, wheezing and trouble breathing, unknown weight loss and hoarseness. Treatments for small cell lung cancer include surgery, chemotherapy, and laser/ radiation therapy. () Surgery is used if the cancer is found in only one lung or in a lymph node. Since lung cancer normally occurs in both lungs, surgery alone is rarely used. () Some patients are given radiation therapy or chemotherapy after surgery to try and kill any of the cancer cells that may be left.
