In the article, researchers Congdon, Dunham and Sels (1993), examined how life-history characteristics affect the responses made by the population of long-lived organisms. In their study, the Mark and Recapture technique was used to observe the movement, habitat utilization and nest selection of Blanding’s turtles during 27 of the last 37 years on the E.S George Reserve. Blanding turtles were great models for this study because they were freshwater turtle species that have a life-history and demographic characteristics that resemble sea turtles and tortoises. An example of a life-history feature shared amongst long-lived organisms was delayed sexual maturity. Like Blanding’s turtles, Desert tortoises reached sexual maturity between 12-20 years
