Blaming the Victim means that the problem is triggered by the people who are affected by it when they usually are not the true perpetrators. Often, there is a main issue that is causing a specific event or events to continually occur and we should first work at an attempt to solve it. Unfortunately, this is not generally what happens. Generally, people will believe that the victim must have done something wrong or behaved inappropriately, therefore bringing the issue upon themselves. As a result, the “solution” chosen to try to the problem will often be punishing the ones affected, isolating them, and/or attempting to force them to change their actions. This is particularly evident due to the fact that Chief Bruno, amongst other officials, is clearly isolating those who were not able to clear the vegetation within fifty yards of their home. Obviously, these people specifically did not start the fires themselves, as it was clearly stated in the article that this was done by the warm weather and heat lightening in these states. However, the officials are acting as if the incident is completely the fault of the victim and there is no other way around the situation. In fact, they are suggesting that they should let some homes in particular burn in order to serve the “better” ones, which is absolutely outlandish. The fire marshals are clearly blaming the victim because they are trying to justify this inequality by saying it is their fault. Although this group did not choose to follow the majority and keep a clear radius of fifty yards, they did not technically do anything wrong and should be offered the same amount of protection as everyone else. All people should be given safety and security as residents of that particular state and are entitled to fire department services. There is no reason that anyone should be denied those basic rights, even if there are serious wildfires
