By 1518, King Charles I of Spain authorized the slave trade because of the high demand for cheap labor that sprouted from the Spanish New World. The Spanish imported slaves to Mexico and the Caribbean Islands. The Portuguese by the 1530s were already importing slaves to Brazil. Through the Transatlantic Slave Trade, roughly around 12 million Africans were sent to the Americas. In result, many countries in the Americas have some of the largest African diasporas in the world.

Making Brazil the 2nd largest country with the highest population of blacks behind Nigeria. 4.8 million slaves were brought to the ports of Brazil that were controlled by the Portuguese. The reason why so many slaves were brought to Brazil was because voyage between a Brazilian port and African port is much shorter and easier accessible than to the other Latin American countries and the United States.

Due to this factor slaves in Brazil lived in more barbaric conditions than slaves in the United States. The harsh conditions and high import of slaves caused slaves to cultivate their culture in creative ways that led to modern social contributions.
