SeaWorld was originally planned to be an underwater restaurant. The concept grew into a marine zoological park in San Diego. In the first year alone, the park drew more than 400,000 visitors. There are three SeaWorld parks in the United States today, including the original. SeaWorld cares for 30 killer whales. PETA stands for the rights of animals, but its adoption rate in 2011 was 2.5%. According to an article on The Atlantic, in 2011 PETA euthanized 713 of the 760 dogs they received and euthanized 1,198 of the 1,211 cats they received. They found homes for 24 of those cats and dogs.
Blackfish, documentary that came out in 2013, focuses on Tilikum, a killer whale owned by SeaWorld that has contributed to the deaths of three people. After this documentary was released, the uproar against SeaWorld was huge. Performers who were scheduled to play at SeaWorld all dropped out, SeaWorld announced they suffered a $15.9 million loss and their attendance was down 5%.
SeaWorld uses the money they receive from their park visitors to provide care to animals. SeaWorld has a rescue team that is on call 24/7, 365 days a year. Over the past 50 years, they have helped more than 26,000 animals. Their primary goal is to nurse the animals back to health and return them to the wild. If they deem an animal too injured to return to the wild, they either keep them in one of their parks or send them to another
