The purpose of this report is: to analyze the most relevant effects of the film Blackfish to SeaWorld, how those effects have affected SeaWorld’s business, management, and shareholders, and finally, determine if SeaWorld’s response to the film is enough.
Soon after Blackfish was released, the controversy started. Since the beginning, PETA has been one of the most persistent issues for SeaWorld; using different tactics and technology, PETA managed to reach thousands of people that rise against SeaWorld. Direct action was part of the strategy, asking people to sign petitions and to go to street protests. In 2013, when SeaWorld sponsored a float, which featured Shamu, in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day

Furthermore, the fact that SeaWorld has faced multiple lawsuits during the last years, have helped worsen SeaWorld’s image. In the last months, it has faced several lawsuits, including one by Lou Baker, a SeaWorld shareholder, which claims that the company misled investors about the impact of Blackfish. This is important because, for the public, this may mean that even the insiders of the company mistrust SeaWorld. Also, consumers in Florida and California sued SeaWorld alleging that it used false advertising and misleading information to deceive …show more content…
One of the biggest moves is the creation of the webpage “SeaWorld Cares”, which features multiple articles, videos, and research showing how it cares and protects killer whales. One of the strongest arguments the webpage presents is that Blackfish is propaganda, not a documentary; it argues that the central premises of the film are wrong and explains why. The content of this segment is strong and promising, but it should be advertised differently, taking advantage of more effective media like television. Also, the “Response to Blackfish” argues that Blackfish focuses only on some incidents over SeaWorld extensive history, excluding everything else. The arguments SeaWorld presents are solid and worthy, but it should be more focused on what good things the company does and stress on it so the public can sympathize with it. In addition, SeaWorld deployed a twitter campaign called #AskSeaWorld in which consumers were invited to ask anything about animal care, conservation, breeding, and training. However, this campaign drew criticism because there were many questions from activists that were unhappy with

As a child, I remember pressing my face against the TV being in absolute awe when I saw a SeaWorld commercial with the infamous Shamu jumping out of the crystal clear water. Years later I look back at my foolish innocence and open my eyes to what really happens behind the closed gates of SeaWorld. Shamu and other orcas alike are put on a spectacle with lights, music, and talented trainers for the smiles and laughter of the audience and used as a ticket selling mechanism for the multibillion-dollar company. In 2013 a documentary film directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite was released on national television on CNN; this film is known as Blackfish. Using the rhetorical components ethos, pathos, and logos Blackfish opens the gates to what really happens…

The propaganda piece Blackfish tried to turn it’s audience against the idea of whales held in captivity, yet the film was ineffective because it utilized emotional appeal, inappropriate diction, and contained many logical fallacies thus alienating those that viewed the piece. Blackfish, commissioned by CNN Films and directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, is a response to the, amongst other things, taking whales from the wild, separating whales from their mothers, and keeping them in a miniscule enclosures, and perhaps most recently the death of SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau. What Blackfish aims to accomplish is emotionally connecting with it’s audience, more likely than not being those who do not know much about orca whales in captivity. Where…

The film, Blackfish directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, targets mainly the audience of the general public and any previous or upcoming customer of SeaWorld. It is meant to inform the public and customers of SeaWorld how in humane treatments and conditions the Orcas have to work in at the amusement park by persuading the audience in using many pathos, the appeal to the audience’s emotion, but using the deaths of multiple trainers. Not just for the fact that over 70 “accidents” between the Orcas and trainers and four deaths, but it has also been stated that, to date, there has been no record of an Orca attack to any human in the wild. Lets be honest we all have enjoyed the occasional visit to Sea World and all the excitement that comes with it. SeaWorld has made several online statements about the inaccuracy of Blackfish. The most impressive of these statements was a 32-page document outlining many of Blackfish’s inaccuracies with cited evidence. For example, SeaWorld points out how most of the “SeaWorld trainers” interviewed in the film never worked with Tilikum, and how the film uses outdated information and footage to ignore SeaWorld’s modern facilities and protocol. News outlets still unfairly consider SeaWorld a target anyway, because Blackfish appeals to emotion while SeaWorld fights back with facts. Blackfish in news articles is often framed as if the film’s producers are underdogs stepping up against the soulless corporate entity that is SeaWorld.…

With the documentary there also came lots of questions as to if everything seems to be correct and every fact can be backed up with specific evidence to prove that SeaWorld is in fact engaging with their whales the way that Blackfish states. One of the top questions that has remained unanswered is if SeaWorld says that things in Blackfish documentary were false and they used fallacies then why did SeaWorld not offer to give an interview and declined them when they offered? This is something that remains unanswered and so does every other statement stated by these top trainers that used to work at SeaWorld. Another thing that is not clear to the audience of Blackfish is why are there no recent SeaWorld trainers that are currently working with these orcas’ that were interviewed? Even though everyone that was interviewed in Blakfish were ex- orca trainers they still had more than just the facts, they gave specific evidence to back up any claims towards…
