Animals kept in captivity has been a heated controversy throughout the decades. Whether wild animals should be kept in captivity to be able to protect them from various hazards, while others argue they are inhumane space limiting the freedom the animals deserve. For example SeaWorld Orlando released a film exposing the reality behind the scenes at SeaWorld, from the animal's living conditions to the animal's trainers. This brought attention to the public in 2010 and the subsequent release of the condemning documentary, Blackfish, in 2013 brought to light the treatment of the wild animals being kept in captivity and whether or not it is an ethical practice (Worrall, 2015). It is not humane to keep large mammals in zoos or theme parks. Dolphins, orcas, elephants and other mammals are very intelligent mammals with complex social constructs in which scientists studied for decades and yet are not fully understood (Laidlaw, 2016). They are being trapped in cages and are being taken out of their natural environment and climate. These animals are obligated to live in climate they never have come across (Harrison, 2014). The polar bear for example normally lives in cold and icy temperatures and they are being placed in humid areas such as San Diego California (Ruiz, 2016). In most cases, animals will also lose their natural instinct by not being allowed to breed, hunt for their prey, or do social activities. They become considerably tender as well as becoming more domesticated pets rather than wild animals. Losing their natural instinct causes them to suffer when they go back to the wild. These animals rely on the keepers to feed and take care of their daily needs. However, their movement might be restricted but they will not suffer from threats or stress of predators. They will be treated for irritation and pain of parasites, injuries and illnesses. Suffering or dying of starvation, would not be an issue due to the high-quality diet with all the nutrients required for each particular

The propaganda piece Blackfish tried to turn it’s audience against the idea of whales held in captivity, yet the film was ineffective because it utilized emotional appeal, inappropriate diction, and contained many logical fallacies thus alienating those that viewed the piece. Blackfish, commissioned by CNN Films and directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, is a response to the, amongst other things, taking whales from the wild, separating whales from their mothers, and keeping them in a miniscule enclosures, and perhaps most recently the death of SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau. What Blackfish aims to accomplish is emotionally connecting with it’s audience, more likely than not being those who do not know much about orca whales in captivity. Where…

An article counteracting the renowned film, Blackfish, a documentary about the inhumane treatment and situation of orcas in captivity, was released by Seaworld Cares. Seaworld Cares is a foundation for animals supported by Seaworld. The article was the company’s retort against the film’s “ultimately false and misleading points”. The main purpose of the article is to persuade the reader, while providing some information to support their points. They wish to urge the reader to believe that not everything in the film, Blackfish, was true nor trustworthy.…

SeaWorld is a multi-million dollar corporation that serves as home for 23 of arguably some of the oceans’ most beautiful creatures. Blackfish is trying to change that with a very captivating argument. Although emotionally compelling, Blackfish is an invalid argument against captivity, It offers a solution and demonstrates practicality, which makes it an argument of policy. However, it is not a valid one, for it lacks a strong and reliable foundation of evidence to support its reasoning for the solution it demands. Blackfish presents former trainers and scientific representatives who present facts about SeaWorld, as well as scientific claims that object to captivity.…

Since Tilikum the killer whale killed trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010 at Sea World Orlando, there has been a great outcry over the topic of whether whales should be in captivity. So much so, a film in 2013 grossed $2,063,312 [1] by negatively depicting Orca whales in captivity. However, since 2010 there has been 197 [2] human deaths by ‘domesticated’ canines, but yet there is no emotional uproar or million dollar documentaries shaming domestication of man’s best friend. Why do we have particular trouble with the training, confinement, and breeding of one species of animals but turn a blind eye to another animal? The $2,063,312 film “Black Fish” seems to accentuate the mistreatment of Orcas in confinement at Sea World.…

With all the negative headlines regarding SeaWorld Park and their captive animals, I strongly believe SeaWorld should not be a tourist attraction even at the expense of killer whales and other marine animals being held captive. At the same time, people of all ages enjoy experiencing a wild animal splash a wave of water right in front of them. Most people aren’t conscious of the fact that these animals are tortured and are living in a tank that cannot sustain their size for the rest of their lives. The Blackfish documentary released in 2013 gave the public a wide perspective of reality in which these animals and trainers face. After the break out of the documentary, admission to the park started to decline.…

Recollecting to my childhood memories, I remember the trips my family and I took forth to Seaworld. As a child, I admire the polar bears and penguins behind the glass, the splashing of Shamu’s tail towards the splash zone, and the ride of Journey to Atlantis. I never really thought about if the killer whales in a big concrete pool were happy at such a young age. Now, there has been a big controversy on the captivity of the marine mammals, especially the killer whales.…

The news of SeaWorld 's mistreatment towards its star marine animals raised suspicion in whether or not SeaWorld 's actions were humane and necessary. The entertainment that the orca whales have brought to the theme parks crowds have quickly changed from fascination to pure hatred. Blackfish allowed for the uneducated peoples that visit the park to become aware of what was occurring behind the scenes. The documentary release wrecked havoc on SeaWorld’s attendance and profit, causing the park to question what to do next. Cowperthwaite gave the audience a better understanding of what a whale 's environment should be like versus what the captive whales are exposed to.…

I have recently watched the documentary, Blackfish. After I watched this I had a totally different view on whales in captivity. Seaworld shows in there commercials that it is a perfect place for the whales when in reality it is not. When I was younger I saw them as pets that could do tricks, but now I see that it is not acceptable for these whales to be contained in spaces that don’t accommodate their size and living needs. This is a serious problem in our world today.…

From zoos, to aquariums, to petting zoos, and even our own pets, humans have always been fascinated by animals, and have gone to certain extents to use them for learning purposes, preservation, survival, companionship, and occasionally entertainment. Menageries allow people to learn about animals from a safe distance and see some animals which they would never have seen if it were not for wildlife parks. Many argue that captive animals are not happy in their environment, and should be set free from zoos in their natural habitat. Although many find captivity cruel and unnecessary, having animals in captivity is beneficial to our society as well as to captive animals because when done right, endangered species are protected and well taken care of, people are able to experience beautiful wildlife,…
