For journal four I decided to watch the film Blackfish, which is very different from the other films I have picked before instead of an inspirational, encouraging documentary about overcoming something or being optimistic; it is very dark in comparison. Thus, this documentary follows a killer whale named Tilikum a Sea World whale that has been in captivity most of his life working shows at the theme park however, he has also killed three people during his time in captivity. Two of which being trainers who worked with him on a daily basis and the other one being someone who snuck in to swim with the whale. At first I thought this was maybe the implied narrative of the film.
Consequently, that was not necessarily the narrative of the film; instead in my view it focused more on how whales in captivity suffer both physically and possibly even psychologically. To create this narrative the film employees various former SeaWorld trainers’ interviews and older footage of the whales and trainers interacting with one another they also used a lot of layering of audio to set the scene and darkness in certain spots. Each interview is setup as a three point light interview however, this film used various visual metaphors as well instead of physically showing the whale attacks they instead used footage of horrified audience members or even

The filmmakers do this to create terror and they do this over and over again. “Accident’s” were a big topic of the narrative one of the trainers says that the park has had over 70 whale attacking incidents or “accidents ” that were not relayed to the trainers that often. They do this by again using layers of audio and visual metaphors of courthouses and typing police reports on the

Tilikum and the other whales were treated horribly . They were starved if they didn't do the right thing. The owners thought the orcas would learn from their mistakes but they would only take their aggression out on the other whales. The whales were kept in a small dark floating metal box in the ocean all night with all the whales squeezed in. In the morning the orcas would have scratch wounds on them because they would fight during the night.…

Blackfish has shown that keeping killer whales in captivity brings danger to the whales themselves, the whales they interact with on a daily basis, and the people around them. The film uses many rhetorical techniques such as pathos, ethos, and logos, to demonstrate that it is inhumane for whales to be held in captivity. Killer whales are very human-like in terms of their brain…

The entire film is relies on false authority. The audience has no one to believe but the trainers used in the film, most of which have not worked for SeaWorld in over 20 years. The experts the movie claims to use could be actors as far as the audience knows, and none of them help strengthen the central argument. Do any of these people know enough about whales in captivity to educate the audience? The film opens up with shots of a trainer in the water surrounded by whales.…

Lastly, how the orcas have been mistreated in SeaWorld. Held in pools as large animals with more than one orca, causes them to “rake” one another, and when given a lack of food as punishment can be frustrating for them. The most emotional story was of how they were captured and brought to SeaWorld. When their capturer shared his story of taking them away from their mothers and how they would just wait inside the net for them and make distress calls. He began to tear up, as he explained some of the baby orcas would die before they even got to the parks.…

This means that at any given time any trainer working with a killer whale is in danger of losing his or her life and SeaWorld never addresses this concern. In the article Sea World is always on the offensive focusing on damaging the credibility of "Blackfish" by calling it "bias slant". Yet, at no point in the article does Sea World take the time to address the main arguments and concerns made by "Blackfish" and defend itself. For some unknown reason Sea World did not address the main issues of the documentary and the fact that they didn’t is suspicious to the readers. Leaving the readers asking the question why didn 't they address the main arguments, to which the readers have already answered it with the conclusion that Sea World might be afraid to address these arguments.…

This cinematic distortion of facts casts SeaWorld in an incriminating light. One example is the very opening scene of the film, a construction of various clips of killer whales and trainers, with inauspicious music and an audio clip of a 911 call made regarding Dawn Brancheau’s death. This is formulated with the intent to mislead the audience into believing that Dawn Brancheau was killed during or surrounding a water event, or that she engaged in waterwork with Tilikum, which is not the case. Not only is the footage at the beginning not of Dawn Brancheau, but the opening scene is not even all the same trainer footage. Neither are the clips of Tilikum, nor do they feature an attack or aggressive act of any kind.…

Berg also talked about how the company made it seem like Tilikum had nothing to do with death of trainers. The company had told them things that made the whales look harmless, but in reality they were a danger. Sea World feeds these trainers facts that were not true leading the trainers to believe and say whatever they wanted them to. From here the hunters had to net the babies away from their mothers to capture them. The former diver noticed the whales had more emotions than expected because he saw the other mothers and babies staying around the captured whale. Another example of this is when a baby killer whale was being taken away from its mother at SeaWorld to be shipped to another park. The mother stayed in a corner for days making a call that the trainers have never heard before. Experts were brought in to examine the whale’s call and they diagnosed it as a long ranged call that no one has ever witnessed before.…

There was an accident that a killer whale (Tilikum) drew and killed a veteran trainer (Dawn Brancheau) in 2006 at Sea World during a show. Other workers used nets as an alarm sounded, booted the audience out of the stadium at that time. However, it was too late. She was killed by Tilkum, and people witnessed the accident. This evidence goes to show the differences in living conditions of captivity versus the wild, and the cause of this aggressive behavior and attacks can be linked together because of one thing, captivity. In captivity, many of the whales suffer from poor physical and mental health. The tanks that these whales are being forced to live in are only twice their size, causing the animals swim in small circles or float aimlessly, compared to traveling an easy 50 to 100 miles per day in the wild. When these animals are put in an environment like this they tend to get uninterested and unmotivated in the things that are around…
