Black people in America have been treated with disrespect and have not been given equal opportunities to their white counterparts. In the past, people of color have not been given the same rights as white people. Today, Black people in America are still being faced with discrimination, racism, injustice in court, police brutality, or simply being black. The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement raises awareness for these problems that black Americans have to face everyday. The National Catholic Reporter has an article written by Beth Maschinot that states, “But while liberals cite the progress that has been made of these fronts, the Black Lives Matter movement is issuing a deeper challenge: The centuries old time frame that see black life as ‘no life, a shadow life, or a threat to life,’ must go” (Maschinot 2). They are changing the way everyone in the U.S. used to look at black Americans; to the way people should have always looked at them, as people. To do that, people have change the way they are represented in the media. In an article written by Khury Petersen-Smith for the ISR, it says, “The state’s racism and that of the news media coverage of the protests, which involved both institutions disparaging Black marchers as, ‘looters’ and ‘gang members,’ gave a green light to far-right terrorists” (Petersen-Smith 3). Media outlets called the protesters “gang members” and “looters” when they were protesting for Black Lives Matter. They were peacefully protesting for the death of Michael Brown and the excessive use of force the police used to, “Keep them under control.” According to BLM protests are getting people to talk about what really happened when Michael Brown died. They are getting attention from politicians, like Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton, and more people are joining the movement to say that Black lives do …show more content…
The movement is about bringing awareness to the issue of racism and the struggle that Black people face. In an article on BlackLivesMatter.com, it says, “...the Black Lives Matter movement is not trying to make the world more unsafe for police officers; it hopes to make police officers less of a threat to communities of color” (11 Major Misconceptions About the Black Lives Matter Movement 4). They know that police officers are people, like everyone else, but they want police officers to stop using excessive force for minor crimes or for asking why they are being arrested. It makes black people feel unsafe in their own communities when they feel like they can’t trust the people who are meant to protect them. They want police officers to prove that they are able to trust the Black community, not the other way around.
