The article “Historical Fiction and Maryse Conde’s I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem” is based on the French historian’s ideals about the reasons for Tituba to be accused of witchcraft. According to Conde, Tituba was one of the first witches of Salem to be accused based on race, gender, and her native Barbados characteristics on singing and dancing but there is very little access to her historically. There are small traces of Tituba in legal documents of that time. Some historians would say that Conde’s imagination of Tituba surpasses the limits of historical credibility.
