Black twitter as a discourse community sounds bizarre right? I know, butt it really isn’t. So what is black twitter? For those who don’t know Black Twitter is a cultural identity on Twitter focused on issues of interest to the black community which consist of a subset of users who discuss Black politics and culture. I became a member of twitter like most to share my outrage and disappointment about the current state of our country and the to my surprise I found I was instantly connected with thousands of other users just like me with a public goal of striving for racial justice and first-person representation of black culture and its encompassing issues. The presentation of these goals are dynamic, changing with every topic discussed. @Deray, the political activist and creator of many # shared his view on black twitter in which he states while much of black twitter shares similar values and assumptions of the black experience, its importance lies in its role as a platform in which these values can be openly discussed, and so are challenged and must be defined. “Therefore, its importance lies in its primary goal of representing first-person experiences, …show more content…
Swales states that membership in a given discourse community “implies uptake of the informational opportunities” For Black Twitter, this uptake can be as simple as opening the app on your phone or computer. Twitter uses “trends” to present popular topics across the platform at a given time which is a mechanism for information. For example, the creation of the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag, which has since then been tweeted more than 9 million times meaning that many Twitter users experienced Black Twitter even if they were not a part of it before. Twitter user could critique the movement or show solidarity via tweets and retweets containing the phrase or
