The three goddesses, Aphrodite, Hera, and Athene start right from the beginning in a disaster. It all starts when Eris, the Goddess of Discord causes a ruckus. She wasn’t invited to the wedding feast of “[King Peleus] of the Myrmidons [who] took for his wife a sea nymph called Thetis.” {Sutcliff 313.} Thereafter, Eris threw an apple on the table, and vanished. The apple said “to the fairest” and everyone thought it was rightfully for themselves, for some specific quality that they had. After this, the women knew that the only way to settle this was by getting other people’s opinions. They asked people at the feast, but no one wanted to reply, for they would make allies with who they chose, and enemies with the other two. After Paris told the goddess of beauty and love that he wanted a wife as beautiful as her, she promised his wish in return for the golden apple. After letting down other offers, he accepted.
