The 1989 film “Glory” is an historical film based on the true events of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, which took place on June 18, 1863 in Charleston, South Carolina. The 54th regiment was one of the first infantries to enlist Black soldiers in the war and was led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. Despite their shortcomings and adversities as African American men in America, these men were tenacious and very determined to succeed the war at Fort Wagner. Although this film highlights these powerful and impactful scenes that occurred on that fateful night, a majority of these scenes were over exaggerated and sugarcoated for a much more cinematic effect. In other words, some of the scenes in the film did not portray the events of the 54th Massachusetts…

The dog movie “The Champions” I found to be a touching and profoundly dramatic film about the pit bulls rescued from the brutal fighting ring of former Atlanta Falcon’s star quarterback Michael Vick. It chronicled those brave individuals that risk it all to save them, overcoming much pressure from PETA and the Humane Society to euthanize them. The film successfully exposed the prejudice and much misunderstanding while slowly eradicating the myths surrounding this breed. The documentary unfolds the journey of five of the dogs such as Handsome Dan, Jonny and Little Red to name a few, and their second chance on life and their supreme power of resilience and the true significance of the Human- Animal Bond. It features several rescue organizations such as Best Friends Animal Society of southern Utah, BADRAP centered in Oakland, California and individual families who reached out to these creatures with love and compassion.…

This documentary blew me away: it called me out on issues I didn’t even knew existed and filled in the gaps on my previously ignorant view of history. An underlying theme of the film was the continuous control of African-Americans under systems of racial control that have “appeared to die, but then are reborn in a new form tailored to the needs of the time” (Alexander). Hence, after the civil war, mass numbers of African Americans were arrested for trivial crimes like loitering. “It was our nation’s first prison boom,” Michelle Alexander, author of “The New Jim Crow,” explained. Though slavery was “officially outlawed,” loopholes such as convict leasing were born.…

Director D.W. Griffith employs a variety of innovative filmmaking techniques, under the categories of mise-en-scene, cinematography and editing, to tell his narrative in Death’s Marathon. I will focus on a few techniques that stood out to me as essential stylistic decisions that progressed the narrative. Firstly, the costumes and how they distinguished between characters, and events; secondly, the blocking and character movements and how they expressed emotion; thirdly, the lighting and how it distinguished between locations and guided our focus; and finally the editing and how it created suspense in the climax. These are only a few stylistic decisions that Griffith 's made, each one is equally important in developing the film form, however,…

Leatherstocking Tales Set in colonial New York in the 1750’s, The Leatherstocking Tales tells the epic tale of Hawkeye, a European young man raised by Native-Americans and his odyssey in the forest where he encountered many Natives and became engaged in a battle of the French and Indian War. The novel series by James Fenimore Cooper signifies the difficulty of being the bridge between two worlds. Hawkeye lived in the forest amongst the people the settlers called savages, but considered himself to have possessed the gifts of the white man. The series takes place in the forest, a thickly wooded area which provides shelter as well as a blind eye to those unsuspecting. Personally, I found the film The Mask You Live In very eye opening. It focuses around how young boys are taught to portray their assigned gender and how they carry the lessons they are given into manhood. From as young as six years old, a boy is taught not to show emotion; that crying and hugging and any public displays of affection towards friends or loved ones in too feminine and unmanly. Boys learn to watch their father figures and associate them as the ideal role model for masculinity. When a father shows aggression towards a woman who then starts to cry, a young boy would not initially know what to make of it, and would possibly then associate violence with being manly and strong emotions as weak and girly.…
