This book is about a black woman who died of a cervical cancer in 1951 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Doctors took a cell from her cervix without any consent of her or her family. Her cells are still alive today, growing and multiplying. After this event her family will never be the same.…

Unaware of the toxicity of the vermiculite, the workers were slowly being killed.…

Estimates show that 1,200 people in the US still die from black lung disease annually. The situation in developing countries is even worse. • Cardiopulmonary disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, lung disease, and kidney disease have been found in higher-than-normal rates among residents who live near coal mines, according to a 2001 US study. • Toxic levels of arsenic, fluorine, mercury, and selenium are emitted by coal fires, entering the air and the food chain of those living nearby. • Mine collapses and accidents kill thousands of workers around the world every year.…
The health concern was a slow-moving issue that could take months or even years to kill the person with it. “...home in his black streaked breath…” The unnamed man in the story carried Black Phlegm with him out of the mines. However, he was not worried because he would die to put food on the table for his struggling family, “It’s good money Dorse. It’s our only money”.…
The film, Blood on the Mountain goes into the detail and hardships of the employees of various coal mines throughout West Virginia. It is made incredibly clear in this film that the coal miners lead a fairly unhealthy and abnormally short life, due to the line of work that they are in. There are multiple reasons as to why these workers are so unhealthy; however, the central reason is their job, and more so the environment of their job and the salary they earn. This concept was also noted by Friedrich Engels, all the way back in 1845. I will argue that it is still relevant in today's date that it is simply not possible for the workers to be healthy and live a fulfilling life due to the toxic environment in which they work, the pressure of maintaining…

Progressive Presidents Essay During the Progressive Era, the election of 1912 included three presidents who each had agendas to fix problems created by the rapid urbanization. These problems include the control caused by big business, bad laborer conditions, and the need for conservation. While all of the presidents worked to correct problems during the Progressive Era, Theodore Roosevelt was the most progressive president because he regulated business, supported labor reform, and strongly supported the conservation of natural resources.…

While during the study which was in 1946 the U.S. government was the one who ordered the public health servers to have black men left untreated to distinguish the effect of syphilis on white and black people. The discovery of penicillin as a medication for syphilis was made in 1942 yet, the study was to be continued as they were commanded to complete the study until they have a strong evidence to prove that black men and whit men did not differ when it comes to disease affecting them. The U.S. government were the one who were not willing to pay the expenses for the treatment of syphilis and the four hundred twelve black men were neglected. There's a quote in the book he wrote about, in which he states, “The coal is hard, and accidents to the hands, such as cut, broken, or crushed fingers, are common among the boys. Sometimes there is a worse accident: a terrified shriek is heard, and a boy is mangled and torn in the machinery, or disappears in the chute to be picked out later smothered and dead. Clouds of dust fill the breakers and are inhaled by the boys, laying the foundations for asthma and miners' consumption.” You can tell how deeply he wrote those sentences and convince the United States for passing laws. So that being said, he also helped with women's rights and civil rights.…
