Black lives Matter began with a hashtag on social media #BlackLivesMatter, and is an international organization that originated from the African-American community in 2012 after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Treyvon Martin an African-American teen. Black lives Matter usually takes action when an African-American is dies unjustly or other racial issues such as racial profiling, police brutality and racial inequality in the US courts. Black Lives Matter was co—founded by 3 community organizers Alicia Garza who coined the hashtag for the movement and was previously involved in organizing against violence toward Trans and gender non-conforming people of color and has written for big publications such as Rolling Stone and Huffington Post. Opal Tometi is executive director for Black Alliance for Just Immigration who has also been published in big publications such and Rolling stone and Time Magazine. Patrisse Cullors who is an artist and an advocate for criminal justice reform. The Black Lives Matter website goes on to say this about the movement. “Rooted in the experiences of Black people in this country who actively resist our de-humanization, #BlackLiveMatter is a call to action and a response to the virulent ant-black racism that permeates our society.
