Black Lives Matter is a black liberation movement that has spurred controversy throughout the country because of their numerous protests and has caused many news sources to write articles arguing for or against their protests by use of ethos, pathos, and logos. The articles that will compared are from The Star Tribune and Black Lives Matter’s website (blacklivesmatter.com) and are titled “Milwaukee violence detracts from goals of shooting protests” and “A Herstory of the #BlackLivesMatter Movement” respectively. Both articles use different ways of persuasion, Black Lives Matter’s website uses three instances of pathos and a two occurrences of logos to influence the audience to support their movement, and The Star Tribune’s article, on the other hand, main persuasion technique utilizes ethos with a one example of both pathos and logos to persuade the audience that the violence in Milwaukee is taking away from the reason the protests are happening and focus of the protests. To understand the context of this issue, an article from CBS News titled “Democratic Debate: Do black lives matter?” will also be reviewed. “Democratic Debate: Do black lives matter?” is an article from CBS News and is written by Reena Flores and reviews the portion of a Democratic presidential nominee debate regarding Black Lives Matter between Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Martin O’Malley and Jim Webb.
