Black Lives Matter Interview

Morgan State University is a HBCU in the eastside of Baltimore. Baltimore is known as a dangerous city with serious health issues, high crime rates and excessive police brutality. We are predominantly black school, 84.4% are represented by blacks, as a student body we must contribute to the cause “Black Lives Matter”. In the DOJ report they listed that they interviewed several creditable sources such as current commissioner Kevin Davis and former commissioners. Our student body can do the same, on my field trips to Baltimore City Detention Center and Maryland Correctional Institution in Jessup. We can interview the wardens and guards at these prisons, ask them what they think about unconstitutional arrests and police brutality. We can create more panel discussions about violence, situational awareness and policing. …show more content…
My thoughts were, people are big and bold behind a keyboard but you never see their face at these panels gathering information from credible people and trying to make a change. Our bark can be bigger than the bite, It all starts with leadership as well. If Dr. Wilson would have a panel of his own alone with the sociology majors and teachers, I believe we can make change not only with Morgan and the surrounding community but all over Baltimore. Then it would be a domino affect, Towson, Johns Hopkins, and Loyola would all contribute to help raise awareness about current social issues we are facing. I believe change is happening, arrest numbers declined beginning in the late 2000s in light of falling wrongdoing rates and endeavors to move towards a more all encompassing policing model concentrated on building group

Intro Our judicial system has developed to the point where law is seen as black and white. What the judicial system fails to acknowledge is that there are some gray areas. In the article, “Colleges of Crime”, written by Brad Edmondson, an award winning writer, he speaks of a young girl whose whole life changed drastically in a blink of an eye. Angela Thompson was 17.…

The world we live in today is one to be disappointed about in the aspect of America’s law enforcement. Early law enforcement was introduced in the 1800’s in Great Britain. Originally established with the same traits as its military, their purpose was one of great value which involved serving and protecting the people at any cost with a civilized and humane approach. America had since then adopted the law enforcement structure from Great Britain, but ultimately warped the structure into that of their own. The war on drugs in the late 70’s was a huge influence in the decision to push for a more militarized law enforcement; and now we are where we are, America’s policing is structured in a way that was thought to be even more beneficial for the…

Pick up any newspaper or watch a news program over the past several years; you will see a story about police misconduct. The recent events involving police misconduct, and the perceived failure of the justice system to hold officers accountable has started a call for reform, oversight, and retraining of law enforcement personnel on a national level. Systematic reform on all levels of law enforcement is a critical first step to improve accountability. According to the ACLU’s call for reform and the elimination of police abuse, “Nothing will be resolved until there is systemic change throughout this nation in the implicit and explicit bias against people of color and particularly African American youth who are routinely targeted by law enforcement even within their own communities.”…

Raising Community Awareness regarding our Criminal System Flaws It was the winter of 2012 when Trayvon Martin was shot in Florida by a neighborhood watch volunteer, who assumed he was endangering his neighborhood because of the way he was dressed. The jury found the volunteer innocent after he killed the teenager because he felt he was in danger. It happens over and over again. I remember hanging out with my friends, all us African American teenagers and being afraid because we all were wearing hoodies since it was cold, wondering what if it happen to us.…

The Black lives matter event was a life altering experience that opened my eyes to current day discrimination in the United States. During this program, we got the opportunity to meet three individuals who are activist in their own rights and fighting for justice and equality. These individuals included Opal Tometi, one of the founders of the black lives matter organization, Andrea Densky, a brave woman of color who climbed a flagpole outside the South Carolina Statehouse and removed the confederate flag, and Pastor Herber Browry III who works along with community organizations in Baltimore addressing issues such as poverty and racism. Throughout the seminar, each speaker talked about the reason they became activist and with the majority of…

However, my one suggestion is keeping open a specific prison system designed to seek justice for murderers, rapists, and child abusers, who commit the most horrendous crimes. Within the prison system, there is a general lack of respect and regard of human life that has become a prevalent attitude among many prison workers. The primary focus is what will replace prisons, so that they are not needed, and the world can function without them. Angela Davis states, “There is a growing body of literature on reshaping systems of justice around reparation, rather than retribution” (Davis, 2003, p. 114). If an extensive number of abolitionists are working together, solutions such as access to drug programs and mental health care, as well as improving family and community connections, will be enacted.…

Today, the white race is more in touch with its whiteness than ever before. In the last ten years, the number of white people who feel that discrimination against the white race is a problem has tripled (Bacon). Race used to be easy to ignore for the average white person in America, but times are changing. Today, everyone is exposed to more information than ever before. The media, as well as social media, is a constant reminder of race relations.…

A number of challenges currently face the juvenile justice reform efforts. Therefore if my state governor appointed me to a task force to help reform juvenile justice, the ten issues I would identity in need of reformation would include, mental health, youth in child welfare, closing the loophole on status offenses, juvenile indigent defense, probation, keeping kids out of adult jails, addressing racial disparities, group homes and halfway houses, day treatment programs and wilderness probation programs. The issue with mental health in juvenile justice is that over two thirds of the youth involved with the juvenile justice system experience some form of mental health problems (Smith, 2017). Each year over 2 million youth come into contact…

    Black Lives Matter Riots

A group known as Black Lives Matter has been created to combat police brutality against minority men and to exclaim these lives should not be taken away or put in harm’s way simply because of the pigment of their skin. However, according to the media, this group has caused more harm than good (McClain, 2016). Not only has it caused a divide between police and minorities but it has also caused a divide between minorities and Caucasian Americans. The riots, while they bring exposure to the incidents, they do not actually change anything. The public perception of something that started out as a positive initiative has quickly shifted to a facilitator of racism.…

The practices used in the US Criminal Justice system have been considered controversial, and they’ve had disproportionate effects for the Black community. Black people have unfortunately been subjected to criminalization, and overwhelmingly represent a large percentage of those under the criminal justice system. One of the controversies that have arisen between the criminal justice system and the Black community, is the excessive amount of policing that has led to police brutality. Not only is over policing problematic, but it is the type of policing that has led to the myth of black criminality. However, to eradicate society’s view that Black people are somehow prone to be criminals we must first alleviate not only the amount but the type of policing.…

I interviewed an African American coworker, or as it happened, was more a discussion about the current state of the inclusion of minorities in America and more specifically the inclusion of African Americans in the workforce. The coworker I interviewed is in his early 30s, an 11 year military veteran, and is currently working on his second masters, which is an MBA. As mentioned previously, he is of African American decent and the only minority working in our office, which is made up of twenty two white males. He was raised by his grandmother from a young age after his father left him and his mother was unable to care for him. During his childhood, he lived in a predominately black neighborhood in the city of Pittsburgh.…

This summer a new movement came about called “Black Lives Matter.” This movement began in part because of the Michael Brown murder, which angered many Americans; specifically blacks. Michael Brown was fatally shot by Officer Darren Wilson after stealing from a corner convenience store. Officer Wilson encountered Brown and a dispute over Officer Wilson’s gun ensued. It is said that Wilson shot multiple rounds into the front of Brown’s body while he was facing towards Brown with his hands in the air and was completely unarmed.…

Trends in policing and functionality are directly related to society’s view on the police. My grandfather who was once a Massachusetts State Trooper, will talk about how well respected the force was up until he retired in 1990. He would say how almost no one would dare to talk back during a traffic stop, or how people genuinely appreciated him for holding the position that he did. I think it’s safe to say that the view on law enforcement is now a polar opposite than what is was thirty years ago. Due to the new view on police, community policing is making a huge comeback in order to mend relations between agencies and its’…

Throughout this semester, Diversity in the Criminal Justice System has taught me to think critically on the fact being presented to us on a daily basis. Mainstream media in America has influenced the way society has viewed race relations. Media, the platform controlled by a small group of corporate business entities, who are constantly lying and telling society what to think. Minorities, especially people of color are being told that they are the victims of mass racism nowadays. Problems such as mass incarceration, police brutality and/or poverty are being painted as issues only minorities are facing.…
