How many times have you heard of a police involved shooting? How many times have you heard that an African American man has been shot and killed by a police officer? In reality we can not name how many times, all we can say is, a lot. But the killing that struck hard was the one of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman, a white man who was on neighborhood watch back in 2012. While driving through his community on watch, he spotted what seemed to be a suspicious black man wearing a black hoodie walking through the neighborhood. Zimmerman called the police and he was instructed not to leave his car. Patrisse Cullors was one of these people publishing on her facebook “Declaration: black bodies will no longer be sacrificed for the rest of the world’s enlightenment. I am done. I am so done. Trayvon, you are loved infinitely. #blacklivesmatter” (Sinder, Simon). Other people saw her status and liked it and some even used the hashtag themselves and before Patrisse knew it, almost everyone was using this hashtag. Astonished on what she had created her and her two sisters; Opal Tometi and Alicia Garza decided to move all this support into the streets, by creating Black Lives Matter Ride. Black Lives Matter ride was a national conference that was organized by Patrisse Cullors herself and with the help of Darnell L.Moore. The goal of this conference was to call to speak upon and act on the issues. Some of these issues include: Police contracts, misconduct records, Investigations of police, community representation, “militarization” of police, and the use of body cams. This national conference was very successful and this fight is even more present today.
