Jake opened his eyes and coughed out some blood. His chest hurts like crazy. Then, he remembered the missile targeting his helicopter. The last thing he could recall was jumping out the door of the helicopter as he heard the screams and cries of his fellow soldiers. Jake gritted his teeth and tried to shake the image and sounds out of his head. He grabbed his pistol a few feet away from him. Jake stood up and surveyed his surrounding, clutching his ribs. He continued talking to his radio for a long time until finally he gave up. Jake sighed heavily and started to walk towards his right. He could make out the figures of rifles pointed at him. “Stop! Do not move!” yelled one of the guys with a thick accent. “Put down your gun.” Fearing for his life, Jake got up and started running the other way. However, he did not get far when his ribs started pulsating with pain and he fell down. Sand flew into his mouth. One of the men fired a warning shot and told Jake to stay down. A minute later, the men caught up to Jake’s exhausted body. “Pick him up. He’s from United States,” said one of the men. World War I was a conflict that claimed the lives of millions of soldiers and altered the lives of countless others. Shortly after the War, two novels surfaced, Generals Die In Bed by Charles Yale Harrison and All Quiet On The Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, that became influential in our understanding of how the soldiers lived. Each novel provides a firsthand account from a soldier’s point of view on one of the most brutal wars ever to have been fought. The novels portray war without the common popular veils of patriotism and heroism. General Douglas MacArthur stated “The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war”.…
