This means that Black History Month will give us opportunities to really understand African Americans and what they did to survive or to be treated equally. Not to just know the facts but to understand them. There was a study in 2014 grading all fifty states and the District of Columbia on how well their public schools taught the Civil Rights Era. Twenty of the states received a failing grade. Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Oregon, and Wyoming-Civil Rights education was totally absent from state standards and curriculum. They found less teaching of the Civil Rights in states outside the south and those with fewer black residents. This study shows that these students don’t even have a chance to learn about black history because they are not being taught it (Anderson 2016). By reliving and remembering black history we can show people the struggles and challenges African Americans overcame in this country ("Why it's important to observe Black History Month" 2015). African Americans struggles and accomplishments will serve as inspiration for the rest of America. Every race is connected to the history of this nation and by celebrating Black history Month everyone can be included in a tradition of acknowledgement, involvement and community engagement ("Why it's important to observe Black History Month"
