The Black Guerilla Family became more structured as it grew from inside the prison, using their reputation to their advantage and developed a defined hierarchy. The high ranking leaders of the Black Guerilla Family extended its power and control outside the prison walls as it pulled in members from other gangs. The BGF began to recruit people on the outside to “serve as BGF couriers” and in fact had so much power that if those recruited chose to opt out or decline, they would have to “pay a monthly fee” (Ferranti, 2014). This was clearly an organized group who used crime to their advantage with complete disregard to the humans around them and a clear lack of respect for authority.
