Today, Black Friday is famous for being the first Christmas shopping day after Thanksgiving where crowds are drawn to special offers from many retailers. Countless people participate in the shopping; however, they are not aware of how the day got its start. It started in the 1960s when Philadelphia, Pennsylvania policemen complained about the crowds coming into town to shop for Christmas as well as for a football game on that following Saturday after Thanksgiving and called it Black Friday. Many department stores, such as Macy’s, held Thanksgiving Day parades. Santa Claus was at the back of the lineup, and this kick started the Christmas shopping season.
