Black Friday On Thanksgiving Day

Black Friday is an excellent time to save money and have an excuse to spend! While it’s a joyous and exciting time for the consumers, it can be a stressful hectic time for the employees. Unfortunately employees sometimes have to come to work on Thanksgiving day. Thanksgiving day is a very profitable day of the year for stores. In fact in 2010 November/December retailers made around 50% of their years profits (CNN Money). With that being said, it’s a great time for retailers to make money and consumers to have an entertaining night/day.

Evening Business Insider talked to a long time employee at Best Buy, who worked five black fridays, here’s what he had to say. “When I started, the incentive was extra hours and there was excitement about the rush of it. But as the shift toward Black Thursday there was really no incentive anymore. It was annoying to have to come in on Thanksgiving however, since you had to come in on a holiday you would get holiday pay. I refuse to go out on Thanksgiving afternoon. I think it’s ridiculous business’ have invaded Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday to save a few dollars. I’m hoping that it goes back to Black Friday actually being on Friday not Thanksgiving.” As clearly exspessed, he’s not thrilled about working on …show more content…
"My first Black Friday, I was working at a Walmart. I was assigned to be one of the employees that would cut open the plastic on the pallets which contained our merchandise. Basically, as I readied [the] box cutter, I got shoved by a customer and I fell right on it and sliced my hand open. After getting through that and patching it up, I came out on the floor and promptly got punched in the face when I picked up a DVD on the ground. A customer apparently wanted it." –Redditor Wildfires. "I started working retail in 2007 at Circuit City. My first Black Friday was unbelievable. We were supposed to open at 4 a.m. We all stood at the front doors to watch people come in. I stepped out a little too far and my manager literally had to grab me by the back of the shirt and pull me back before I got stampeded. Once everyone was in the building, I started to make my way over to my register. As I walked over, I saw two women fighting over a printer. Before I had the chance to ask if they needed help, one woman hit the other with her purse, shoved her, and ran towards the camera department. I will never forget that as long as I live. The second Black Friday I worked was during 2008. It was a complete 180 from the previous year. The day dragged, and we missed our budget. The recession clearly made an impact." –Shannon S. Like these employees explained, Black Friday can make for a stressful day/night.

It is certain that stores have the ability to sell popular culture through their products and merchandise, but not many of them can say that they conduct their own national Thanksgiving Day Parade. Through its wide range of available products, Macy’s is able to target just about any type of consumer and profit off of them. The store not only carries a variety of products, but also a variety of brands, allowing a wide range of customers to be able to shop there. By offering everything from jewelry and fragrances to children’s toys and small electrics, Macy’s—the largest United States department store company by retail sales in 2015 —has been relatively successful in doing so since 1858. Black Friday open on Thanksgiving? Even though people enjoy shopping I think stores should still be closed because the shoppers can't spend time with family and because people can get hurt… Shopping on Thanksgiving can be fun… I guess? But really is it. When you should be thankful for the things you have you are out fighting over stuff that you probably don’t need. Too me stores should be closed because people get hurt or worse killed and that is pretty sad over shopping.…

GameStop has decided that it is in their and their employee's best interest if they shut down all of their stores around the globe on November 26th, Thanksgiving. Have you ever noticed how in the stores you will see a plethora of Halloween costumes, decorations and the like but immediately following Halloween, you see Christmas themed decorations all over and very little to commemorate Thanksgiving? The most I've seen have had leaves and maybe a cornucopia and really only enough scattered throughout the store to fill a half to one whole aisle. It seems that our national holiday is only truly named and observed within "leaked" black friday ads, alerting you to when the advertised deals start. This never really bothered me in the past. As a little girl Thanksgiving was all about the Macy's Parade, the dog show, food, and the countdown until santa claus and presents galore.…

In the United States, there are millions of people waking up early in the morning to shop on Black Friday to get discounts off the items they want. Why do people want to wait outside in the freezing weather when you can stay home and find deals online. With that said, the next following week is Cyber Monday, when stores have many more great deals online. Cyber Monday is a lot less of a hassle than Black Friday, due to not having to up early in the morning, waiting outside in the cold weather, fighting the crowds, finding the items you want, and waiting in line to check out. Cyber Monday is becoming one of the biggest shopping days of the year with a lot less stress.…

Considering the countless number of people who love to shop can either be obliged or pressured into participating in this “holiday,” they will decide that they can shop their hearts out on either the days preceding or succeeding. For these select people(the majority), this day is just a sabbatical to rest and prepare for the abounding days of shopping ahead. If ending consumerism-or just raising awareness of it-is the goal of the Buy Nothing Day, then it’s goal will not be met. Similarly, this unique day can easily become an annual routine. It merely becomes another day off from shopping as Labor day is a day off from school and Memorial Day is a day off from work.…

Black Friday shopping always seems to me like the worst decision anyone can make. If you’re out shopping and eye the same TV as another person be ready for a fight. I believe this is because people feel deindividuated. Deindividuation occurs when people join a mass of others who generally have the same goal(). Black Friday creates mobs of people all out to find items for cheap.…
