The Unsolved Case of Elizabeth Short
Los Angeles is home to one of the most renowned unsolved murders in the world, it involves a beautiful young lady, and an unidentified psychopathic killer. This case is a real-life mystery that has captivated the attention of everyday people, top-rated investigators, and well known moviemakers who have used the chilling details as inspiration for big time cinematic pictures. On January 23, 1947, a phone call was received by an editor from the Los Angeles Examiner by someone who claimed to be the killer and offered the editor mail items that belonged to Elizabeth Short (Stacks). The day after the editor received the phone call, a packet arrived that contained “Short’s birth certificate, business cards, photographs, names written on pieces of paper and an address book with the name Mark Hansen embossed on the cover” (Stacks). Two days after the phone call, “Elizabeth’s handbag and one shoe” were reportedly spotted sitting “on top of a garbage can in an alley” nearby Norton Avenue, which were later recovered at the dump (Stacks). Most of the evidence were prompts sent in to peak the interest of law enforcement, but some of this evidence lead to many great investigations that may help pin a finger on who the killer really …show more content…
Handwriting samples of Hodel’s were later compared to that of the handwriting in the letters sent in by the killer and it was determined that there were differences that occurred with the uppercase version of the letter “N”. The photos found in Hodel’s possession were also examined and it is said that experts are “85% certain that these two photos [were] not of the same woman” (“Black Dahlia Confidential”). The LAPD revealed that years after Short’s murder, much of the physical evidence involving the case disappeared. Officials say they are unsure how this happened but the evidence “simply vanished from the files” (“Black Dahlia Confidential”). Although the LAPD have considered Hodel to be the killer for a long time, they are not yet ready to pin him as the murderer (Latson).
