Black Blizzards: A Short Story

I sat inside our house helping where I could, how I spent most of my days now. Ma prepared food as Pa worked the barren fields that have long been dead. I gust of wind flew through the our front door spreading throughout our ramshackled house, refreshing but ominous of what was bound to happens next. A black cloud brewing in the distance suddenly made itself visible. The wind picked up as the cloud roared towards us, suffocating everything in site without hesitation.
“Ma! The Black Blizzards comin’!” I shrieked, paralyzed in fear.
“Helen! you stay inside!” She ordered me. Ma had shut all the windows in seconds, but waited as she gazed out towards the plains . It was too late, He was too late… our old tattered door squeaked shut. I knew what was happening outside. even with the wet rag covering my face. I knew that countless neighbors and friends have been caught outside, unaware, when the black blizzards roll into town. Anyone outside doesn't stand a chance, including Pa.

Each breath was increasingly more harsh on me. It was gritty in my mouth. I could feel the soot covering me head to toe as everything around us was pelted relentlessly with dirt. After what felt like hours to me, the dust settled. It was eerily silent, I didn't dare move. Ma sat up, brushing herself off. She took slow steps towards the door, as if she knew what was on the other side, but needed to prove herself wrong. I glance out of what's left of a door. Ma was leaning over some shape in the distance, motionless. The silence was broken as she exclaimed “He’s Alive! Pa’s alive! Helen get on out
