Black Belt Autobiography

I started for my black belt when I was in kindergarten or first grade. I decided to take classes at my elementary school, Vista Grande, and I was interested in pursuing Taekwondo. I started to go to the official location for classes. I started with my white belt and worked my way up. For each belt, I had to learn a few skills and a form, which is a series of movements. When I thought I had mastered the skills and form, I had to test to earn my next belt. At each test, I was with others who were also trying to get to their next belt. I had to perform each form for the current belt I had in addition to each form from each previous belt I had earned. Most people passed their test, but some people failed. If I recall correctly, I never failed a …show more content…
Every test was finished and they started calling names for the fellow students and friends who had endured the training and the test with me. I was the first one up and waited for everyone else to get up. I noticed my father who was filming me and all of the other spectators who had wandered in to watch the spectacle. I was instructed to take off my current belt, a red belt with a black horizontal stripe that went around the whole belt. One of my favorite instructors and mentors awarded me with the belt. I had to hold my arms up like a ‘t’ while he tied the belt around my waist. I started to tear up a bit because I felt like I had accomplished very great, and I had. While my mentor wrapped the belt around my waist, he whispered to me how proud he was of me and reminded me of all of the great things I had done in order to get my black belt. After he finished, he left my side and I stood up. I bowed out to finish the test, and met with my parents where I was …show more content…
When working hard gets tough, I always persevere and finish the workout as hard as I can, similar to how I persevered during black belt training. As a citizen, I respect my family, friends and everybody that I meet, always making sure that my actions are appropriate, similar to how I treated my instructors and fellow classmates in the program. Under pressure to do the best of my ability during practice and races not only for myself, but also for my team, I always come out to perform

An unusually fragile underclassman: devoid of faith and fearful of a new environment brimming with the cold embrace of the unknown. “What do you like about yourself?” Sitting in the audience, listening to an assembly during my freshman orientation of high school, this existential question hit me like a tidal wave—initially destructive yet ultimately metamorphic. Those around me blessed with a wealth of confidence from a young age beamed with vanity: athletes, scholars, musicians and those exceptionally precocious few with the ability to thrive in multiple environments.…

This time I was going for my first belt test. I looked towards the center, there sat 6 judges, each with a pencil and paper. In an attempt to remember everything I learned in class I began to run through the combinations in my mind; punch, punch, duck, wait or was it duck, punch, punch. I sat there waiting for my turn fearful that I was going to mess up. As I grew more anxious the other combinations seemed to mix together.…

I would say that achieving the level of black belt is liberating in a way, because not only is it a regression to the basics, it removes the material aspect of the game. Learning karate transcends from a race to the next colour, to an intimate experience of the self. This is something I experienced when I got my black belt three years ago. I feel like at that point, learning Kata was not a step towards getting my next belt; it was learning kata for the sake of learning it. Rather than extrinsically enjoying learning, which involves enjoying the end goal of an action, it became intrinsic enjoyment, which is the enjoyment of the action…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…

Mixed martial arts have a stigma both to its athletes and the sport. People view it as a blood sport and often compare it to gladiators fighting to the death. Back in the early nineties this was common among society, but today most people accept it as a sport just like boxing. However, there are still people, most likely the older generations, which view it as a blood sport, or two men rolling around on the ground.…
