Introduction Black Beauty is a realistic animal story completed and published by Anna Sewell in 1877. The novel Black Beauty focuses on the animal itself and uses the black stallion as the first-person narrator. Anna Sewell didn’t give Black Beauty human traits but instead presented him as an animal. The novel is a fictional autobiography of a gentle horse named Black Beauty, which drew on her memories of the abusive treatment she had seen. Anna Sewell, the author of the novel, wants to promote the humane treatment of the horses as she grew up relying on horses. The Book
Anna Sewell wrote her novel Black Beauty into four parts, and each part marks a different life of Black Beauty. The first part talks about the circumstances of Beauty’s birth till he becomes a stallion of Squire Gordon; he also talks about how he had his breaking in and had it compared with Ginger’s. A misfortune came to the family of Squire Gordon, his wife got sick and she has to move to a warmer country. Beauty together with Ginger was sold to Squire Gordon’s friend.
For a horse that is not used to bearing rein takes away the spirit of Black Beauty. The second part tells about the changes that happened to Beauty. Beauty meets a groomsman named Reuben Smith when York was away to London; Reuben Smith could doctor and manage horses but when he’s drunk he could become a terror and a nuisance to his family and to everyone else. When Reuben was asked to drive Blantyre to town and after doing his task, he stays and drinks for hours. Reuben was riding Beauty home when his shoe got loose; he got injured when his hoof broke and the inside part got cut by the sharpness of the stones. Smith flung off when Beauty stumbled and fell.
