“You know that feeling,” she said, “when you are reading a book, and you know that it is going to be a tragedy; you can feel the cold and darkness coming, see the net drawing tight around the characters who live and breathe on the pages. But you are tied to the story as if being dragged behind a carriage and you cannot let go or turn the course aside.”- Cassandra Clare. I never liked reading until the sixth grade. I stumbled upon the book 'Black Beauty' by Anna Sewell and that little stumbling changed my life. I never understood why people liked to read, it seemed like a waste of time. I used to believe that my books represented who I am and who I want to be, but I don’t believe that so much anymore. Very often while reading I find myself

Overall my experience with reading has been forced, and limited and has lost its original glamour. For me what reading novels brings to other people, I can obtain through other means that are more appealing for my way of thinking. While I don’t enjoy the act of reading a 600 page mandatory novel, I do enjoy the conversations that it can cause. Such as the debating, and sometimes the arguments, that come from the material within the carefully thought out cover pages can be intriguing and rewarding. However, to say that books have influenced my thoughts about the world, or have made…

Reading literature does not equal comprehension or understanding. Readers must first understand how their life shapes their perspective and then they must let other perceptions dominate their thoughts in order to understand the writer’s perspective. Barbara Tuchman explains that books are the foundation of life’s disciplines because “books are humanity in print”. We read books to understand other people’s culture, struggle, and perspective, but only if we desire to understand. Perspective shapes how we view…

I found the ending of Black Beauty, by Anna Sewell, to be a satisfying ending. It seemed to wrap things up nicely. After Beauty is injured and nearly overworked to death, he ends up in a beautiful home surrounded by people who care for him for the rest of his life. Although it is rather bittersweet, as the last line reminds us of everything Beauty has lost: “often, before I am quite awake, I fancy I am still in the orchard at Birtwick, standing with my old friends under the apple trees” (49.22). This line shows that even in the comfort of his lovely home, Black Beauty still wishes he were somewhere else.…

Reading allows for one to drift away from reality and opens a new door of an alternate fictional world. Once the reader has developed an emotional connection to the book and finds it intriguing, it is impractical to close the book. Reading allows a person to think creatively and take a break from life 's stresses and worries. Whether one is reading for pleasure or for academic reasons, if enjoyable, the difference should be indistinguishable. Gratifying books teach lessons and try to get the reader to think deeply about a topic.…

I am not easily moved by literature. Since before I can remember, literature has been the keystone of my education; whether it was having my mother lovingly read me a children’s story before bed as a young preschooler, or staying up past my bedtime in elementary school engrossed in wondrous tales of adventure and danger. Reading, specifically for enjoyment, has always been a priority in my life as it allowed me to escape the monotony found in everyday life, providing me with the necessary tools to break the chains of reality and enter a lush world full of new exciting experiences. However, with the flood of literature I was exposed to as a child came standards which were abnormally high, numbing my reactions to books that where anything…

I wanted to go out and experience things or just figure things out on my own. I saw reading as a barrier to those experiences. As a kid all I wanted to do was run around the corner in my neighborhood and go play basketball or baseball or football, or street hockey, or even hit golf balls in the field at my high school with friends. Reading got in the way of that.…

Reading was something I was practically raised on as a child. My dad made sure that my younger sister and I were read to every single night before he tucked us in, passing down a tradition that he believed had aided in shaping his own childhood. I distinctly remember my simple mind roaming along in the lands of Narnia and Middle Earth as such books instilled in me a restless sense of adventure and a longing to learn. This longing drove me to read more and more on my own, all the while my father continued to read to me at a higher and more complex level, that at the time seemed unattainable. Yet books to me were journies completely separate from my own world and I could never seem to envision them as anything more than a source of entertainment.…

When I was just a little girl, I loved reading fairy tales which brought me to many vicarious thrilling adventures, and when growing up, non-fiction books taught me how to become a good person. Besides that, reading has brought me to many various levels of emotions, such as joy, love, hate, fear, and sorrow. Some stories not only make me feel euphoric with happy endings, but they also make me feel despondent when a character’s deep sorrow touched my heart.…
