What is it that we take pride on putting one another down to be on top? This is the question that arose while reading The Help which was published in 2009 by Kathryn Stockett. It takes place in 1960s right before the civil rights movement. We can take a close view at the black and white people 's society. The difference between black and white Americans are vividly little hence they rip apart the universe. Likewise, equality plays an important role leading to the discrimination because of social status, race and gender.
Social status permits power to White people, therefore they have control over blacks without realizing. Social status shows one 's standards. The line drawn between the whites and the blacks is clear as water. When Minny goes to work for Celia, she tells her to do their white people stuff like “Go shopping…get some new clothes. Go do whatever white women do when the maid’s home”(Stockett 51). Minny is already aware of her status and now showing Celia her status, which they never dare to cross. Even though Minny feels suppressed she wishes to be equal which seems impossible at the time. Like the time when Minny couldn 't find any job because of Hilly false rumors(Stockett 495). Hilly holds tremendous amount of power being that, she is most likely to win the bet. Consequently, Celia could care less about social class but, there is a always a fear to cross such line.
