The difference that Joe explained was that the employees live the mission. I feel that it is because of this that Black & Vetch had been successful. The mission for the company is to build the world to be a better place. Joe explain that in order to achieve the mission of the company the employees strive to hit the values that are given to the employees. Values such as integrity, shared ownership, common purpose, stewardship, respect, accountability and entrepreneurship. The one value that stuck out to me was the shared ownership. I feel that this is increasingly important to companies I the twentieth century. Many of the younger generations that are beginning to work full time in the workplace what to feel responsible for the company being successful. After thinking through this I wanted to make the connection that Black & Veatch is like the NFL. Some people like to play football while in high school but many don’t continue this passion after the graduate. Those that do will go to college and continue their passion. It is only select that will make it to the pros to play for the NFL. This is similar to engineering, some people are interested in the career but only some will make it to the top of the class and secure a job at top global companies such as Black & Veatch.
The last big take away that I had formed this conversation was that Black & Veatch has a hand in the bottom of the pyramid. This is the poorest socio-economic group of the world. Although they do not approach this issue alone they are working with other companies around the world to help provide water to the less able. Joe supported this concept by telling a story about a personal experience in Afghanistan. When looking at long term sustainability I believe that companies like Black & Veatch will pave the way for providing services to individuals around the
