In an appearance Thursday on CNN's "New Day" to discuss health care and President Trump, controversy arose when I said this: "When I was a kid, President Kennedy did not want to introduce the civil rights bill because he said it wasn't popular, he didn't have the votes for it, et cetera. For my midterm speech, I plan to argue my stance on racism, more specifically how I believe some of the black culture may unintentionally perpetuate racial inequality. The solution I will propose to this solution is not making the assumption that all blacks want to be associated with these racial stereotypes. I also want to propose the idea that blacks are guilty for these social norms, as are other races. This solution will hopefully lead towards acceptance on all sides of the racial spectrum. On the date of December 6, 1863, slavery ended and that was also the day the 13th amendment was ratified into the Constitution. African Americans don’t see the flag as a symbol for anything except for racism. The Kul Klux Klan actually used this flag as a symbol for racism, and not every white American uses the flag for that purpose. Also the flag was not the original flag for the Confederacy. Not all Africans see the flag as a bad symbol, but most do and that is all because of slavery.…
The main stream media’s lack of racial and sexual diversity is a growing problem in America. Sonia Saraiya, author of the article The Burden of Representation, talks about how the representation of minorities in the media is full of stereotypes, marginalizations, exploitations and misrepresentations from an industry that is almost solely based on appearances. The author is correct because there is lack of diversity in the main stream media, which leads to the formation of stereotypes, loss of self-esteem and lack of opportunities. One reason why there should be more representation in the media for minority groups is because it creates stereotypes for the next generation.…
