Blaas Suspense Essay

The definition of suspense according to dictionary.com is a state or condition of mental uncertainty or excitement, as in awaiting a decision or outcome. In the short, suspenseful film Alma, directed by Rodrigo Blaas, a little girl named Alma ends up being stuck inside a doll, even though she has signs around her to help her know she was in a bad situation. Blaas created a suspenseful tone by using the techniques of setting, camera work, and sound. These techniques made the tone suspenseful for the viewer. Along with other techniques,setting was one that set a suspenseful tone in the film.

At the end, the camera zooms out just so you can see the monster face eating the doll. This can add to suspenseful tone because the monster eating the doll, can symbolize the child being “eaten” or stuck inside the doll. Another way camera work adds to the suspense in the film is when the viewer can see through the eyes of the doll. This adds suspense because the viewer can comprehend more about how Alma could see through the doll. Lastly, Blaas used the technique sound to add to the tone of suspense. Sound contributed to the suspenseful tone. Sound contributed to the suspenseful tone by the way only blinking and breathing is heard when Alma is in the doll. This adds to the suspenseful tone because it makes the viewer understand her feeling of being locked inside of a doll. Another way sound created a suspenseful tone was how the music intensified whenever something negative was about to happen.
