Bj's Brewhouse Observation

Decent Essays
I work at BJ’s Brewhouse in Greenwood. I work there as a server, selling yummy food and good spirits. Sometimes when things go wrong we have customers who do not always act professional. Late night I had a lady who, at the end of her meal, had a problem with her bill. As I started to help her she proceeded to tell me I did not mention the promotion we had going on, and instead of letting me talk she started making noises at me. I tried to explain myself, but she started to cuss while flailing her arms in the air. I felt like I wanted to crawl in a hole, super embarrassed. Not to mention the fact she didn’t want anything to do with me over something so small, and even fixable. Others around her looked to see what the commotion was about, but

I was once a loyal customer of Forever 21, but because of the extremely terrible shopping experience in King of Prussia Mall in Philly. I swore that I would never walk into Forever 21 again in my life. When I was about to walked out of the fitting room area in Forever 21 located in King of Prussia Mall in Philly at around 1-2 pm. , June 5th, an African American female clerk (about 5.8 ~6 ft tall )blocked my way and asked me to hang the clothes up. I was shocked and felt discriminated because she did not ask other customers with western appearances to do so…

There are multiple great fast food chains around the world. But one of my favorite places has to be Chick-fil-a. Chick-fil-a is a fast food chain that sells food only with chicken. They are mostly known for their cow mascot that has the famous catchphrase “Eat more chicken.” The main reason I like their restaurant is because their restaurant tends to have more of a placid atmosphere than the other fast food chains. They also make their employees be kind and tend to the customers' needs.…

Norm violations are common in society today. Norms are defined as being “expectations of ‘right’ behavior” (Henslin, 49). There are two types of norms: folkways and mores. Folkways are a type of norm that are not strongly implemented, meaning that to go against this type of norm is not as severe as going against a more. A more is a type of norm that is forcefully implemented.…

    Bystander Intervention

The main concepts I took away from the article, Social Determinants of Bystander Intervention in Emergencies, by Latane and Darley were, before an individual in an ambiguous situation can choose how to react, you must first define the situation, secondly, an individual can be lead (or mislead) to choose a certain course of action based on other people’s facial expression, discussion, or behavior, lastly, often times the social norm in the US is for males to act calm in a state of stress, often times creating “pluralistic ignorance”, in extreme cases, at the price of another person’s life. I use to work at a bar as a bouncer and have seen the consequences of pluralistic ignorance firsthand. A basic definition of “defining the situation” is, deciding how to act in any given social situation based on your thoughts, social norms, and other people’s…

A Sign That Changed Perspectives Wing’s Chips” is a short story by Mavis Gallant with a very meaningful message. The theme I felt the short story carried was that even though many people have different views on what is right or wrong, they want to be respected and accepted for who they are. “Wing’s Chips” focus is on three separate cultures, who in the end learned to respect each other. I feel as though many people could relate to this story if they have been racially discriminated against. The story is based on young girl and her father from England who go to spend a summer in a rural French-Canadian Quebec town.…

Culture norms are rules set out by society to differ what is “normal” and what isn’t. There are three different types of norms: folkways, mores, and taboo. Violating a norm can result in receiving a negative sanction, reaction from the people. Society control what would be considered norms and can rage from the right way people should enter an elevator or the way people should eat. Negative sanctions also control society as to the punishment if a norm is broken.…

I have always been taught to judge people based on their actions rather than their appearance, and this was a lesson that was completely reinforced by the house I lived in, in which I grew up. As kids, if any of us even remotely suggested that we were focused on someone 's looks, we were immediately punished and reminded that there is no way to know a person based on what he or she looked like, but rather it is important to know the heart inside the body. Making snap judgments based on appearance was definitely not acceptable in our household. This was difficult for kids, since young people often judge people based on first impressions, which generally involve their physical appearance. Nevertheless, as an adult, it became as clear as day to…

We have all experienced our fair share of pleasant and unpleasant shopping experiences. Most of these memories from these experiences fade over time.
