The city Yonkro was heavily protected by army soldiers the town didn't have the correct equipment to help her. Mariatu has to beg for money in order for her and her family to survive. Many people from other towns have been moved to Freetown because it is one of the safest cities in Sierra Leone. There are many amputees who are mainly children. A lot of people from other towns live in Refugee camps thats where Mariatu lives right now. When Abdul was several months old a camp official visited her at the tent she was staying at in the Refugee camp. A journalist wanted to take interview and take pictures of amputees from the war. Her picture was taken and a articled was written about her. When Abdul was about ten months old he was very sick and he needed a blood transfusion. An Italian priest named Father Maurizio payed for the transfusion from donations, but the baby died several days later.
