This study investigates how men who identify as gay or bisexual code-switch between “gay speech” and “straight speech.” The way we speak can be indicative of many aspects of our identity, such as our ethnic background, social class, or educational background. The aim of this research is to examine how sexual orientation relates to speech. This study examined code-switching among self-identified gay and bisexual men through an online questionnaire. The goals of this study were to determine the conditions in which homosexual men code-switch between “gay” and “straight” speech. Analysis of the answers from 191 participants of the survey disclosed a wide range of experiences and opinions, both positive and negative to the idea of “gay speech.”
