Birthmarks are blemishes on the skin that may occur at birth or after birth. Over eighty percent of babies are prone to have birthmarks. Birthmarks are not only hereditary, and some may be cancerous. There are two main tops of birthmarks; vascular and pigmented. This have several subdivisions that can be identified by shape, color, and size. While some birthmarks may fade out as the child grows, others are permanent and even grow. Depending on the type of birthmark is how treatment and severity is determined. There is no defined cause or prognosis of the disease. Some European cultures believed they were caused by unsatisfied wished of the mother during pregnancy. Yet treatment does exist. Surgical treatment, creams that can help fade away the hue, and make up to help cover them. Treatment also depends on the type of birthmark and related conditions. Usually no treatment is needed, but surgery is often used to remove if they affect appearance or result in an increase cancer risk. Examples of birthmarks that don’t need treatment unless for cosmetic purposes are, “salmon birthmark,” and, “Café au Lait.” An example of one that does require therapy or other treatment is, “Port-Wine Stains,” because they tend to grow and not …show more content…
Some birthmarks may be serious enough to cover a large portion of your body, others are small enough to be barely visible. A 6 year old boy from Colombia who was named, “turtle boy” because of a big shell-like growth birthmark in his back. This little boy was even prohibited from attending school because they taught his birthmark might be malignant, contagious, and even ignorantly taught it could be diabolical. This is one of many severe cases that are known about birthmarks. This type of cases have received economic assistance to help this kids with their severe cases. But it is still important to mention that this are only a few as to comparison with the amount of common and normal birthmarks.
