Birth Year Advantages

Improved Essays
Then the third reason why going by birth year rather than graduation year is not beneficial for youth soccer because of the emotional toll it has on being with kids that are a year older or younger. It’s a social divide between grades and friends, for example my little sister was born in 2002, and some of the players on her team birth year is 2001. She has to play with the year younger team and not with her friends that are in the same grade as her. It’s emotionally hard when you have been playing with your close friends for years on the same team, and then have to play with the year younger class because you birth years is a year “younger” than your friends. I was born in 1999 and should be playing with some sophomores, when tryouts came …show more content…
He is looking at which could be inconvenient for him and the players, because he could just be recruiting for the class of 2017, but half of that class is on an younger team which would be mostly girls of class 2018. He is only looking at small portions of player that stand out to him or her.Usually the ones who stand out are the bigger and stronger kids who can be very physical and win the ball more. Then also players who are fast get noticed because they can win the ball more. Kids who are smaller get beat or pushed off of the ball more, but have way better touch or technical skills. Overall more difficult for colleges to pick out eligible players in a fair way “Early maturers who focused on strength over technique find they can't compete with more balanced players”(Para.15 Faraway). More balanced players are the ones who are tall, quicker, stronger, and have good technical skills. When you start assuming and thinking oh this player is fast and strong they will just become a better soccer player over time. Then the ones who aren’t as fast or haven’t fully reached puberty won’t get seen. Those players have to work harder with having good footwork on the ball, good technical work to get noticed by college coaches. I’m one of those kids where i’m an average player, i’m not the fastest, strongest kid on the team. I have to rely on my technical …show more content…
In some cases playing a year up is a good choice, you can either learn and get better or not try and become a good soccer player. If you truly love the sport, you’ll go through hell to get better and go further in life with it. No matter where you go there will always be relative age advantage, only because someone will be a few months older and have had a few more months experience then you will. With anything that you can compete in will have relative age advantage. “Maddux, Stacy, and Scott (1981) observed that, in a group of children who were classified as gifted, 61% were advantaged by a late entry to Grade 1 and thus by a relative age advantage”(Para. 4 Musch). Even though this sounds very unfair, it’s the way of life. It how things have been for many years, some kids can pull ahead by working hard and practicing. “Bio-banding is not new. It was first trialled in US high schools as far back as 1908. For years, New Zealand schools have grouped rugby teams according to weight rather than age because Maori and Polynesian children tend to develop faster than their white counterparts”(Para.6 Doward). Sometimes kids are just gifted and can be the best even though they are two years younger than you

This gives the biggest ten year old an advantage over the other ten year olds on the hockey team. What isn’t fair about this is the fact that the other ten year olds don’t get a chance to practice as much to get better. With practicing everyday and better coaching staffs this will give that ten year old a better opportunity on succeeding. This happens everywhere but in Denmark. What Denmark does is wait until the age of ten, where maturity is evened out, to group these students for advance placement.…

One player states that “as long as you are in the program, they are going to get you through. Maybe not with a degree, but they are going to keep you eligible” (Rothman, 1993). I do not agree with this as the main purpose of attending college is to receive an education to provide a better life for oneself. For all athletes, education should come first. If an athlete is not doing well in school, the athlete should not be eligible to play sports.…

Through the last thirty years of men’s international soccer there have been many teams to rise on the back of a single star. This player usually has the ability to make all of the players around him play better than ever before. A player in this position is generally thrust into the spotlight at an early age, usually mid to late teens, and if they are not the best at focusing, they are not given the time to develop their skills as they keep progressing through the ranks. I believe that this puts an extreme amount of pressure on a young athlete and can cause them to become uninspired in their pursuit of becoming the best in the sport they love. I think that too much pressure does not create an environment that will allow a young star to develop into anything other than a flop.…

Since age 6, I was dragged around Melbourne every Sunday to watch my 2 brothers play footy. Since age 6, I was serving hot dogs and canned drinks to the hungry players in the canteen, and updating the scoreboard for each new goal. It was not until 6 years later my local club introduced an U’15s girls football team.…

The only binding nature of the commitment is your word and the institution’s promise” (Recruiting FAQs 1). Monday, August 22nd, 2016, approximately 10 o’clock PM. I arrived home after a typical summer night out with my friends at the local Applebee’s, however I was greeted at the door by my already enraged father. Before I had time to take my shoes off of my feet, my father was already ridiculing me, spouting phrases such as “you’re so irresponsible” and “you cannot be trusted with anything.” Now of course there was some foul language included sporadically in those remarks, but overall I was shocked at why I was being attacked seemingly unprovoked. My father then decided to inform me that tomorrow at 8 AM I had to report to the soccer fields at Holy Ghost Preparatory School for soccer tryouts.…

Recently, children have been put in competitive sports at a younger age, making them want to participate in competitive sports sooner in their athletic career. Waiting until high school to compete in sports can make students impatient and become less interested in their sports. Middle school sports provide an enhanced physical state, increased social interaction, and better high school programs for the students.…

Youth sports have been a very popular recreation in America. It allows kids to have the chance to play a sport at a young age. However, many of the kids only play a single sport, and the types of adults that either spectate or coach youth sports are mainly split into two opposing sides. One half helps the kids to succeed in the sport they are playing and let the kid choose if they want to play that sport, and the other half force the child to play a sport that they may not like and gravitate towards the child’s every mistake like a moth to a flame. This can cause many problems for the child and can often be overwhelming.…
