Birth Order Research Paper

In class, we discussed the topic of birth order and how it shapes and affects the children in their respective order. Many people believe that birth order automatically says something about an individual: such as how they think or how they act. While discussing this topic during class and in our small group discussions, I began to reflect on my personal experiences relating to birth order. After becoming more informed, my views and thoughts of birth order reformed based on the new knowledge I gained. Birth order is not a reflective of personality it is a result of parenting styles. Being the oldest sibling in my family, I personally feel that there was, and continues to be a greater expectation of success for me, more so than my brother. At an early age I was always taught that being independent and self-motivated was the way to be. I always did all my homework on my own and did all my school on work on time without being told to do so. My brother, on the other hand, was directed in a slightly different direction. It has made me into an independent worker, strong willed, and not reliant on other people. I am usually able to handle difficult situations on my own, and I have learned to tackle my goals one step at a time and maintain a mindset to achieve success. In contrast I noticed that my brother is more reliant, less independent, and unable to individually set goals without the approval of others. When comparing my grades to my brothers it is very evident that I do better because I am self-motivated. My brother does not motivate himself, which ultimately leads to his downfall. It is the difference in parenting skills that has molded my brother and I into two very different
