The personality traits firstborns tend to have due to their birth order are reliable, conscientious, structured, cautious, controlling, and achievers (Voo). These traits are not directly related to the fact that the first child came out of his mother's womb first that he grew up to be a leader. Instead, it is the fact of how the parents treated their firstborn child that shaped his attitude and behavior (Voo). Consequently, firstborns revel in the presence of their parents, which may explain why they sometimes portray more maturity. Firstborns are diligent and want to be the best at everything they do (Voo). In a cross-family examination second borns agreed that firstborns are driven by the desire to reach mastery goals (Carette). In addition, firstborns are more likely to be conscientious and in social situations more dominant. However, when compared to their younger siblings, they are less agreeable and less likely to be open to new experiences (Badger). Traits of the middle child tend to include being people-pleasers, somewhat rebellious, thriving on friendship, having a large social circle, and being a peacemaker (Voo). Many traits that a child has will be influenced due to the placement in their family that child holds. For example the parenting they receive will be different, their responsibilities they have will be different, and the traits they tend to grow up with will be different. All will impact the life that have and how they act in their adult life. While parents might want to treat their children equally it is almost impossible (Rettner). This is this case for most families, and although seemingly harmless, it will have a very large impact on the life your child will
