The Birth of Athena

Athena is known for many things. For example, she is one of twelve Olympians and the protector of Athens. However, she is also recognized for her strange and extraordinary birth. Zeus, the father of gods and goddesses, was Athena’s father. He ate her mother, a mortal woman named Metis. He did this because older gods had told him that she would give birth to the prophesied son that would overthrow him and take over his throne. When it was time for Athena to be born, Zeus endured a very painful headache. It was so painful that he had asked one of his servants to take a sword and cut his head open. When his head was cut open, Athena came out of Zeus’s head full grown and dressed in armor. She became one of Zeus’s most

Athena disguises so that way he is protected by the vengeful suitors (Homer, Book 8: 416-440). By disguising Odysseus, she is helping Odysseus to survive and complete his journey. Since the journey of Odysseus is what The Odyssey is about, and Athena’s action had a large impact on Odysseus, therefore she had such powers on the story. Lastly, Homer states “They would have killed the lot, and ended their hopes of returning home, if Athene, Zeus’ aegis-bearing daughter, had not shouted loudly, and restrained the combatants, crying: ‘Men of Ithaca, cease your fight, so that you may part without shedding each others’ blood. ’”(Book 24: 502-548).…

He swallowed Metis while she was still pregnant with Athena, just so she could not tell him what to do. Instead Zeus gave birth to Athena and was the goddess of wisdom and wisdom of war strategies. My interpretation is that Zeus was afraid that if he did not swallow Metis, he would not be the wisest of the gods, Metis and Athena would be the wisest. I think the reason why Zeus made Athena remain a virgin is because if she was to have a generation of children and some were female, the male gods and men would see that as a huge threat in losing power. For an example, corporations and businesses would rather see a man take charge than a woman due to men in society think women act on emotion which would result in poor decisions.…

In the Encyclopédie, Louis, chevalier de Jaucourt wrote an article on ‘Minerva’. He writes that she is the “goddess of wisdom and the arts, the only child of Jupiter who merited participation in the privileges associated with the highest status of divinity” and that every mythologist and poet speaks of her this way. What surprised me most about this article is the statement that she got the ‘nickname’ Athena (Ἀθήνη) later, which isn’t true. Ἀθήνη, the greek Goddess and equivalent of Minerva, existed in myths and other resources before Minerva.…
