According to Marissa Selner and Marijane Leord, “the exact cause of certain birth defects are often unknown.” Birth defects can be genetic or even a result in bad life style choices. A defect can be present throughout the family history of one of the parents. Certain behaviors, like smoking and alcohol use increase the risk of birth defects. Some children experience some physical problems and some children show no physical problems according to Marissa Selner and Marijane Leord. Review Questions # 5 2. Distinguish between autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive disorders and provide a couple examples of each. When dealing with genetic disorders its important to understand how they are inherited. There are two ways a child can inherited a genetic disorder from their parents. Autosomal dominant disorder is where one parent has a genetic disorder in which it has already manifested such as familial hypercholesterolaemia, marfan’s syndrome, and achondroplasia(dwarfism) and this dominant gene is inherited by their child who will also develop the disorder.…

Spina Bifida The exact cause of spina bifida isn't known to anyone right now. But some factors that do cause it are environmental roles, nutrition, and genetic. When the baby doesn't get enough folic acid (common vitamin b) could be another cause. Some ways to prevent spina bifida are by taking 400 micrograms of folic acid everyday while being pregnant. Folic acid is a vitamin that helps build healthy cells but since it doesn't stay in the body for a long time they are required to take it everyday.…

In the second or third month of pregnancy, a baby's mouth a lip would normally start to come together and fuse into one, but with babies that have this disease, it wouldn’t occur or just not completely form all the way. Some researchers have believed that the most common causes of palates are genetic and environmental factors. It means that when a mother or father carries the gene and it gets passed onto the baby, an environmental trigger could make the cleft then happen. Some risk factors that have been stated to increase the chances of this disease is smoking during pregnancy, being diagnosed with diabetes while being pregnant, the use of certain medications like topiramate or valproic acid, family history, race (most common in Native-Americans), sex (males mostly), and also being obese. I have found a quote that a researcher possibly has a key to where the gene comes from, "Finding this birth defect in every single child in a family is like catching lightning in a bottle because it allowed us to pinpoint the gene mutation that is probably responsible," said Yang Chai, senior author of the study and director of the Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC.…

First of all, any mistakes that are made during the gene-altering process are permanently imprinted on the child. If they are born with a birth defect, for example a lung malformation, they would have to live with the physical effects of having great difficulty breathing. As well, the child would have to constantly be going to the hospital for check-ups, and this will make them feel isolated from society, having to spend so much time away from school and home. If they had a different birth defect, like a craniofacial birth defect that affects the way their face looks, it may cause them to be bullied at school for how they look, affecting their self-confidence.…

Congenital abnormalities and pathologies are some of the most fascinating diagnostically. Situs inversus, a condition in which the organs of the body are flipped to face the other side, is one of the most enthralling to behold. Typically occurring genetically, it is extremely rare, occurring only in 0.01% of the population (Nall, 2014). This congenital abnormality can be demonstrated on not only diagnostic radiography, but also computed tomography and ultrasound. The prognosis for patients suffering from this disorder is optimistic, generally little to no treatment is required.…

An inheritance disorder also known as genetic disorder, is an inherited medical condition caused by a DNA abnormality. Sometimes physicians are not able to label a disease, because it is unknown, and so they call it an undiagnosed disorder. These disorders vary from all sorts of genetic genes from your siblings. Genetic disorders can be caused by a mutation by one gene, multiple genes, or by the combinations of gene and environmental factors. Some disorders are inherited by a parent or are present at birth, but as mentioned previously, sometimes these disorders are not caused by inheritance but by the environment you find yourself in because of the career that exposes you to these hazards.…

If an individual is suspected of displaying physical signs and symptoms of a disease or condition, a genetic test could confirm it. While some family members may seem unaffected by a genetic abnormality, a test could identify reproductive or psychosocial implications, putting the unaffected members at a higher risk of developing the disease. Diagnostic testing is suitable for all ages and can be performed at birth or any time during life, though it could alter their health care choices and medical…

Are Air pollutants Connect to Birth Defects? Every minute 251 babies are born around the world, which adds up to be 361,481 a day and 130 million a year. Eight million of those babies are born with birth defects two thirds due to unknown causes. My purpose to this research paper is to get an idea on what may be the cause to some of those babies to have birth defects and their relevance and connection to harsh air pollutants that their mothers breath in during their pregnancy. The first step in this case is to understand what birth defects are.…
