Birth Date Identifiers

I agree, the nurse was very good displaying proper techniques. At work, we use the name and birth date identifiers as well. I usually say, "for your safety, would you please verify your name and date of birth". Not many people ask why I am doing that, stating the safety reasons, along with the question usually tells them why. In my opinion: I agree that safety and respect need to be part of every interaction with others, not just with patients, but there is a growing madness that is put on nurses these days of patient satisfaction. We (as nurses and doctors) must always say the right thing or the satisfaction score will reflect bad care. For quite some time, I have felt that there is more emphasis on what we should be saying versus the care …show more content…
In this age, not many of us practicing nurses have that much time to spend with each patient, no matter what environment one is working in. People who do not do the work today like we do, sit in an office and make up rules to this game. I am certain that at one point these people worked in our field, but have been sitting behind a desk for a while and have not had the pleasure of increased patient censuses, increased patient acuity, and all the other aspects that nurses are facing today. So, I do believe that the video shows proper techniques; I also believe that it is not realistic in the hurried atmosphere we are expected to work in today. I have told my family, after a busy night in ER, that I feel like a farmer that is herding the specimens in one by one at a fast rate. Hurry up and work harder, but don't let the patient see that you are in a hurry. People are not as dumb as administration thinks they are, they know when things are hurried and they should understand why; although most of them do not. Life, in my short 44 years, sure has changed and I am not sure it is for the

Your proposed PICO question is very interesting and I would love to read more about your findings in your future posts. I do not have any experience in ICU, but I understand your stand on nurse-led extubation protocol. Like Cody mentioned that registered nurses spend their time at the bedside and know their patient very well. Thus, nurses should be able to perform this task without harming the patient. Before your post, I did not even know that the extubation was in the scope of practice for registered nurses.…

Another incident I encountered with this particularly nurse occurred when I was finished my evening shift and was leaving the floor. I reported to the primary nurse I had been working with, completed my paperwork and was about to leave the floor. A call bell rang and seeing that all the nurses were in report, I attended to the client who had rung the bell. Knowing I had to get to post-conference and the client's concern was not urgent, I let the responsible nurse know her client’s…

As a result, the mistakes are not corrected and the consequences can be drastic.…

A deviation in these steps could mean the patient’s blood was mislabeled with another person’s identification label. This could cause devastating results for the patient, as well as possibility of financial burden to the establishment in resolving litigation. The National Patient Safety Goal 2015 recommends using at least two patient identifiers (The Joint Commission. 2015). The nurse should compare the lab labels to the patient’s armband while asking the patient to verbally confirm the name, and date of birth.…

Being in the nursing field comes with a lot of pressures and this article did a good job to highlight some of the major ones. There are many policies that nurses are faced with that sometimes we all do not agree with. Though those policies are put in place to keep our patients and ourselves safe it is hard as nurses to always coincide with all the rules. “If work conditions were deemed sufficiently safe, they could be disciplined for abandoning a patient, a position taken by some employers.” (Beardwood and Kainer, p.57)…

Introduction to the Dental Hygiene profession has been a complete and enjoyable class that set the core all the clinical documentation and protocol to follow here at Fortis college. As part of this class the instructor had create a variety of interactive assignments where students get to experience what it feels when having a real patient in front of them. Such was the clinic observation activity where we, the lower clinic class, had the opportunity to observe how students of a higher class were handling a full clinic section with the help of their high qualified instructors. One of the expectations I had for this activity was that I would be able to see the process of care in action, since the clinician brings the patient to the operatory…

Conclusion Effective communication and the use of therapeutic communication in the patient care setting is a pivotal part of the nurse-client relationship, as well as ensuring patient safety by communicating clearly with other healthcare members. Proper communication is a skill that may come naturally to some people. For those nurses that do not have efficiency in communication, practicing will help in feeling confident in communicating with patients and staff as well as providing a solid platform for quality patient care. Professionalization and professionalism are two very similar words but both have different meanings. Professionalism is considered more of an image because one demonstrates skill, good judgment, and a polite behaviour geared towards specific professions. Professionalization on the other hand is defined as the social process by which any trade or occupation transforms itself into a true profession. Without professionalization, standards would not be set for an individual to act professionally. Both professionalization and professionalism are key components to nursing.…
