There has been controversy surrounding the use of birth control amongst teens and whether providing such preventative methods lead to promiscuity. Some parents feel that there could be adverse effects because it could be perceived that it is acceptable to engage in inappropriate behavior. There have been criticisms from conservatives from a non-profit organization called Family Research Council that speculates that birth control will reassure young adults that it is acceptable to engage in sexual activity outside of marriage (Painter, 2014). There was an initial fear of “sexual anarchy” since the assumption was that the use of birth control would create an environment abetting the involvement of promiscuous behavior. An official at Mills College in Oakland, CA reported,“that there is less talk than there used to be about right or wrong -- the question today is more, is the individual making a wise decision for her future?” (American Experience, 1966) One official felt that the use of birth control promoted promiscuity as long as the end result did not end in unwanted pregnancies. Dr. Mary S. Calderone, executive director of Sex Information and Education Council of the U.S., felt that the pill “provides young people with far too many examples of sex irresponsibly used” (American Experience, 1966). Although many have questioned the moral choices associated with the pill, they have not been able to provide data that indicates the pill is associated with promiscuous behavior. Many argued that there would be a limited level of restraint seen in young adults or adolescents if they were to begin using the pill, but in actuality, the pill is seen more as a preventative method that displays responsible behavior versus promoting promiscuous behavior because the purpose is to teach basic health care
