Siddhartha Gautama was born into a family in the Kshatriya caste in the kingdom called Shakya, found on the hills of the Himalayas (present-day Nepal). Siddhartha’s father was king Suddhodana and his mother was Queen Maya. Siddhartha’s birth was a miracle; his mother conceived when he descended from Heaven and entered his mother’s womb in the form of a baby white elephant (a symbol of purity). She carried him for ten months and could see the baby within her womb. She gave birth to him from her side on the full-moon day of May, while standing and holding a tree. In some Buddhist’s stories, that tree lowered a branch to assist her while she gave birth. Siddhartha 's Path to Becoming Buddha
Siddhartha’s first teacher taught him to meditate and attain a state of deep trance. This was not a permanent solution, the same problems still existed in the world. He tried controlled breathing, which resulted in headaches. He tried reducing his food intake to one grain of rice a day, he became abnormally thin and ill. Siddhartha concluded the best course was halfway from a path between self-denial and his life of luxury in the palace. He decided the best lifestyle was one of moderation.
Enlightenment: Siddhartha began to take food and started meditating again. He sat under a tree in a higher state of consciousness, similar to a state of psychic (inexplicable by natural laws), he remembered all of his previous lives in detail. He saw the death and rebirth of all types of beings as a consequence of their good and bad choices; good choices brought a better life in the next rebirth, poor choices brought unpleasantness.
