Birmingham: Benefits Of A Professional Sports Team

Improved Essays
A professional sports team would be beneficial to the city of Birmingham, Alabama. A professional sports team could boost the city’s tourism substantially and possibly grow its population. The team would need to be from one of the country’s 5 biggest sports: Football, Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, or Hockey. There are reasons why Birmingham never had a professional sports team. The State of Alabama has always been dominated by the two college sports programs, Alabama and Auburn. These two college’s sports programs alone have the same amount of support as some professional teams. Another reason Birmingham has never gotten a professional sports team is because there is only one venue that is capable of hosting a sports team. The Birmingham …show more content…
New and temporary jobs that result from stadium construction and the transportation projects, are among the first positive impacts a new professional sports team's arrival can have on a city. The addition of a sports team to the city can help nearby businesses, such as stores and restaurants, by creating more jobs. A new stadium can add jobs for thousands of people, including food service employees, security personnel, vendors at merchandise booths, and cleaning and maintenance crews. New business creation can also be boosted because of new stadium construction, particularly when it occurs in bigger commercial districts. The businesses that are often created typically range from hotels and parking garages to restaurants, bars , merchandise stores and …show more content…
Billion of dollars are required to support these teams. Currently, Birmingham has the potential to support a basketball, football, hockey, and soccer team. The MLS is the cheapest to support at around 14 billions dollars. The MLB is the most costly at around 104 billion dollars, making it too expensive for Birmingham, Alabama to support. The National football and basketball leagues are currently not open for expansion, which means that the teams would have to be purchased from the cities they reside in. A capable arena or stadium would need to already exist or be constructed to support these teams. Currently, Birmingham does not have an open stadium capable of hosting an NFL team. However, the BJCC could support an ice hockey franchise and possibly a basketball franchise. The national hockey and soccer leagues are open for expansion, which means that a new team can be created in a city that wants them and has the means to start one. This is the preferable route for most cities since it is less complicated. It does not involve spending vast amounts of money to move a team and its entire fan base to a new

Also, creating a new NBA team in Seattle, past fans may not view this team as the real Supersonic team that they loved. Opportunities: Since a new NBA team is entering the market, there will be many fans who will be excited about the creation of the team. As mentioned earlier, the prior I-5 rivalry with the Portland Trailblazers can be rekindled and a rivalry can be ignited with their former team the Oklahoma City Thunder. Since the old fans are still around in the area, there is a very high chance that this brand new team can hit that dormant target market.…

Based on the presumption that the team will be a summer league ball club, and a member of a conference like the Coastal Plain League, the “Cape Fear Shiners” would be located in the middle of two current eastern conference members, the Holly Springs Salamanders and the Fayetteville Swampdogs. This optimal location makes for the perfect stop, here at Jim Perry Stadium for interleague play. The area's only competition that could affect ticket sales is the Campbell University’s baseball team and they do not play during the same times so scheduling conflicts should not be a problem. Having a team in this competitive league could be the first step to potentially bringing a minor league team to one of the fastest growing counties in the state.…

I agree with this because sports teams are a main attraction and their stadiums are key landmarks for a city. Furthermore, the metaphysical connection between a fan and a team increases ones affinity to their city. No fan wants their team to move, the Buffalo Bills would not be the same team if they crossed coasts and became the Los Angeles Bills. This is…

This project was not as easy as I had originally thought it would be. I was interested in this project because I thought that it would be fun, easy, and a chance at learning more about a topic that I am thoroughly interested in. I was hoping that this project could show me, more in depth, what it is like to own a professional sports franchise. To find the answers to my questions I used the game Madden 16 and the Senior Vice President of the Columbus Blue Jackets front office to understand what goes into owning a sports franchise and to create a scenario where I am the owner of a sports franchise. I started off by researching the costs of owning a franchise at school.…

Native Americans in Today’s Sports The use of Native American culture, beliefs and tradition in the form of popular sports team names and mascots can be viewed as proof of the continuing racism against this particular ethnicity. There are those who view the racism and stereotyping involved, and the unwillingness to correct it as a torture of the fact that the culture doesn’t understand the horrific impact Native iconology use can have on Native peoples in the United States. In the United States, there are exactly five professional sports teams and about thirty-five teams using Native iconology in both football and baseball. Considering that teams do not utilize mascots or team names representing other minority races such as African American,…

Why should college football players be paid? There are many universities that are well known for their football teams, such as Louisiana State University, Florida State University, and Alabama State University, which generate $100 million annually. Some schools wouldn 't be as popular as they are without those teams, which make millions of dollars for their schools. Football teams should be paid because players bring colleges a lot of money, they are often seriously injured, and they 're working as hard as actual football players in the National Football League.…

There has been many arguments as to whether having a major sports team in a community can be either beneficial or destructive. By having a professional sports team in a city, it brings the community together and allows them to have similar views on the same subject. People feel as though they belong and are among others that are cheering for their team. Having a sports team in a city gives the people a sense of togetherness and union because they are all wishing for the same thing. For this project, I interviewed Chris Savino, who graduated in 2010 and now works as a Senior Financial Analyst for Major League Soccer, in the sports industry. At Saint Joseph’s University, Savino was an accounting and finance double major with a passion for soccer. Him and a friend even started the Men’s Club Soccer team. Late into his senior year, Savino and a friend started a website, Business of Soccer, with the intent to blog about soccer; however, they soon realized it had transformed into a resource for the sport’s industry and less so a blog. After graduating, he went to work for PwC as a Senior Associate providing auditing and consulting services, while still writing for Business of Soccer along with Goal.com.…
