Brit is taken away from home to a center for supposedly rebellious children because her father fears she may develop schizophrenia like her mother.
The main character Brit learns that her step-mother was not involved in the decision of sending her to Red Rock.
Brit found four friends that were more like a family to her, they kept her from going to the edge and give up.
Brit started discovering irregularities as soon as she got to Red Rock and decided to make the center to be closed down forever since this was more of a jail than a center to help teens.

She is the leader of the group, and since she is the one whom has spent most time at Red Rock she knows all the ways to get to places in there without being noticed.
Bebe follows V in leadership, she is sarcastic and is the one who calls for meetings in the group. She is the daughter of this kind of celebrity named Marguerite Howarth.
Cassie and Martha- Cassie is this girl whom was sent to Red Rock because her parents want her to be a normal girl. She is bisexual but everyone thinks she is gay, except for her friends. Martha is a girl whom is in there because she needs to overcome her weight. She in creative and has a lot of talents.
Brit’s dad- Mr. Hemphill is a tough man, whom has suffered Brit’s mom disappearance and is scared that his daughter may suffer from the same disorder. He is a broody and quite man, married to this woman with whom he happens to have a baby boy. He is always out of home and does not talk to his daughter frequently.
Dr. Clayton- Dr. Clayton is a skinny woman whom has a bowl haircut and is always dressed as formal as a police officer. She is in charge of making up the teens’

The problem was solved when the main character and her friends found the right journalist to write the true story about this center, causing it to close down for investigation, and then the teens could go home for a true recovery.
Brit Hemphill is taken into a trip that she does not want to take to the Grand Canyon, it is a family trip that she would rather not take. Brit is sure it was all planned by her step-mother. Brit did not notice that they were no longer driving to the Grand Canyon. As soon as they got to Red Rock she felt something was not right, though it appeared to be an ordinary value inn. A few minutes passed on and she discovered that it was like a bordering school that her father had her taken to. Next, she knows that she is in this center.
The main character felt she was all by herself throughout the book. She was alone not having family to talk
